itchy... ALL the time! My puppy is ALWAYS biting his legs and bottom and I don't know why! I asked the vet and she said it could be allergies to give him benadryl (half of a childrens) So my husband and I tried that but it didn't help! Sometimes I think he is going to chew a hole in his bottom or a leg off! He doesn't have fleas, I've searched! And the vet said it shouldn't be his food... So I don't know what to do? He does it most after a bath... I rinse him for a good while so I know I get all the shampoo out... My husband thinks he does it because he doesn't like being clean... Any suggestions on what to do? :confused: |
I doubt that it is because he is clean. Not sure why the vet said it couldn't be his food because it very well could be. What are you feeding him and does it have corn or wheat in it? |
Itchy Kids Both of mine did that for a bit. I changed their food to Royal Canine for Yorkies. They are bathed in Chrisystem Day to Day Shampoo and conditioner. Every once in a while Maggie (the oldest) will bite away at her hip area. I spray the spot with Cortaid. That does the trick. Hope this helped a bit. |
How old is he? When did the chew/licking begin? Is it all four paws...or just one spot? There is a lot to check for when a dog is chew/licking their feet. If he is a young pup, allergies can't really develop yet. Is there any chance he was overvaccinated before you got him (thus, depressing the immune system)? Did you change foods? Has he been checked for mites/mange (esp since he is a puppy, as they can catch this from Mom!)? Did you change shampoos? |

I would much rather get to the source of the problem and correct it rather than continually give medications that are clearly not good for them. I think your baby has either a food or grass/seed allergy. I would start with putting him on ground beef and rice for a couple weeks to see if it clears up. I wouldn't do chicken or turkey because they are a major source of the food allergy chain. If that works, then I'd just keep him on real foods. There seems to be a link between, dogs with compromised immune system's which lead to allergies, infections, flea infestation, vomiting, diarrhea and so forth from commercial dog food diets. You may want to read up on how most dog foods are made. He's on a prescription food, I.D. because he had such tummy problems when we got him... It's very bland. He's been on it for almost 3 months... The itching started about a month ago. He was on very high brand food before but the vet said it was too rich for him, making him have diarrhea ALL the time. That's why we're on the prescription food. I got him Perfect Pet Shampoo for dandruff because he has that (the vet said it's because he's a puppy and he'll grow out of it???) He's 6 months old. When I took him to the vet for it they checked for mites and said he didn't have any... The vet bothered me because she didn't give him much time and made my concerns seem like they weren't important... She said just to give him allergy medicine and that would help... But it hasn't. He got his shots very spread out because when we first got him he only had one round then was sick for about a month. He just finished up his last set before Thanksgiving... He chews all of his feet, his tummy, ears and bottom... He's ALWAYS itching! Thanks for all of the advice! |
I agree, try beef and rice diet for a week or so, maybe add some green beens. We feed Bear home cooked , he is 14 months now, never had any itching or any other skin problems. |
Maya also used to scratch herself and my vet gave me special oil tubes to put on her. His skin may be dry and like humans, it can be VERY itchy.
