What do you use to induce vomiting? I'm looking to change what I use and am wondering what has worked well for you. I'm not really interested in using salt. Peroxide just causes way too much foam. I'll be asking E's vet if she can give an rx for something else. Anything you have tried less foamy than peroxide but just as effective? |
{*knocks on wood*} -- I keep peroxide at home, but have been lucky in not using it thus far. I hesitate to even ask this...actually, I think I'll just call it "the syrup thing" - but is the syrup thing recommended for dogs? I can't recall hearing that it is recommended, but now I'm wondering. That stuff is violent though :(. But, if induction is needed...guess we gotta do it. |
Hmmm, never heard of it. They used a drug on Emergency Vets that I wonder about. Peroxide vomiting is pretty violent. Ellie throws up about 10 times - mostly foam. She sounds terrible while doing it and it. :( After our ordeal tonight I'm just watching for sticky gums to see if I need to give her sq fluids or try ice. I just would like something that didn't make them sound like they were violently ill. :( |
Could you be using to much for her size? I'm just wondering since I used peroxide very recently. Kaji got into something he shouldn't have, I looked up what to give him and how much, and he threw up. It was 3 times and that was it, his stomach was empty. Poor thing... I had to clean his face up afterward. :( |

Sorry, I don't know of anyhting other than peroxide. I had to do this when my girls got into a pack of Trident I had in my purse. (I want to add that I had never done this and chose to call my ER vet and have someone there tell me step by step what to do. :) ) It was a violent thing me to see Maddie go through. Cooper, who had ate all the gum, seemed to enjoy the pomegranate taste of her vomit :p Maddie came and sat between my legs in the floor and looked at me with horrified eyes between each heave. :( |
The syrup stuff is syrup of ipecaph sp something like that anyway you can get it from a vet and maybe a pet supplier like revival |
As a nurse, we mostly use syrup of ipecac if induced vomiting is needed. I would ask my vet before using it on a canine though. It could possibly work but we would need to know how much to administer. I'll have to ask on my next vet visit in 3 weeks. |
Ellie has just been very sensitive to the stuff. :( I hate it. But there are times when she gets a hold of the foods that trigger her pancreas to go off and it is just safer for her to go ahead and induce. Looks like amomorphine has to be given in a hospital. Will be looking into the syrup and talking with her vet about it. We will go with whatever her vets thinks is safest for at home use. I hadn't really heard of this syrup before.:confused: Apparently it is fine for pups. |

Syrup of Ipecac was what I was referring to as well. It's NASTY, but does the job for poison issues/induction issues. If you've had to taste it, you will never ever forget it. Even just the smell of it....UGHHHHHH! I'm going to pick some for my doggy first aid kit. I want to first confirm what the dose would be though, bc if too much Ipecac is used...it can be cardio toxic (etc). But if safe for dogs, I'd rather use it than peroxide. |
