Bald Spots! (Dr. YT, I really need your HELP!)
 
Last night I noticed that there are two bald spots (not completely bald, but about and inch or less long) on his back side! ON his left right leg, and on the area above his tail. This is from all the itching!!! I know that there have been a thousand posts like this before but I just wanted someone who may have had this problem share with me. He has been itchy from day one when I got him, and I guess I just noticed how bad it was. I am going to get some salmon oil/omega oil today, but has anyone heard of dips or lotions/sprays that I can just put on spots to relieve itching. How do you rule out food allergies. (I am trying to avoid going to the vet for this one as my money flow right now is slim to none.) I would appreciate any feedback anyone could offer. ANYTHING. Dips, Sprays, lotions, homemade food, oils, etc. Any one know (positively) the amount of benadryl that you are allowed to give dogs. I know its by their weight. PLEASE, I'M DESPERATE HERE!!!

I won't be much help here but my sisters Scotty has TERRIBLE allergies and itching...the poor baby is miserable all the time. Her vet put her dog on an all vegetable dog food but I can't remember the name of it. He is also on meds and steroid shots and after extensive test and different meds and visits to the vet they still don't know exactly what is causing it. Sorry :( I'll try and remember to ask her the name of the dog food next time I talked to her! Hopefully someone else will have a better response.

Thank you for your response. I would be interested in the name of the food. Although he does not see miserable, it is obviously a problem for Thor.
Another thing, I do not want to put him on steriods. I'm not a fan of these hard core drugs. Herbs... :thumbup: natural things... :thumbup:, I would do temporary medicine but nothing long term because I want to ind the problem, not cover up it's symptoms. Thanks again B&B'smom

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here. I'm guessing you've talked to the vet about this before? Are you sure it's not ringworm? Our kitties came home from the shelter with ringworm and managed to pass it on to our two dogs (Tatum and Stormie). We got it under control with medicated shampoo and boy was it fun giving two cats baths every 3 days! I can't help you much if it's allergies - my mom's beagle had awful food allergies and it took forever it seemed to get it figured out. Good luck!

I wouldn't do the steroids either and would much perfer the herbs and natural choices. :thumbup: :thumbup: I'll find out the name of the all veggie food for you though!

Brewer's Yeast helps, I have also bathed Pita in the childrens Aveeno Oatmeal bath, I use a flea comb to get everything off of her also.

Aveeno, yumm! That stuff smells so good. Humm, brewers yeast? Is that the same stuff you bake bread with?

Brewers Yeast can be found at Walmart and is an 8-in-1 (8 good things in 1 pill) stinky little pill that the dogs LOVE! I have mine convinced it is a treat. It also has a flea deterant in it and my dogs have NO FLEAS. It is dirt cheap....less that $5.00. I get the Brewers Yeast with Garlic. Also, about the itching.....are you feeding a dog food with corn in it? This makes the Yorkies VERY itchy.

Thanks for that handy info. As for the corn, nope I know about that and stay far away from it!!

Well, firstly what brand of dog food are you feeding? That could be the entire problem. But my aunts dog Scooter had the same problem and I took him to the vet and just like I figured he was having allergic reactions to the poor ingredients in his food and he was also allergic to fleas! Eek! The poor babe was put on some new food (thank God not what the vet subscribed.. Science Diet and Iams.. NO WAY!) and new shampoo for the fleas and he is doing great and slowly but surely his hair is growing back. Hope this helps.

Ohhhh, I just thought of this. My cousin who lives in FL has a Yorkie. It started getting bald spots and loosing its hair. After extensive testing it ended up being the food.....it was a good food......however, it was TOO much of a good thing (can't remember which food it was). She switched and the dog has a full coat again and is fine....no itching at all anymore. Even if you are feeding a good food, it may not be good for your individual dog.

Thanks again both of you for responding. He was on California Natural lamb and rice but he didnt like it so now he is on costco's lamb and rice. He is flee free. I have oatmeal shampoo, I use conditioner and make sure that I rinse him very well. Maybe it is the food...I'm so stumped. Thanks for your suggestions I appreciate it.

I called my Mom and asked what kind of food my cousin was feeding. She said it was some premium moist food in individual packages but didn't know the exact brand. She also reminded me that the dog even lost control of its bladder. After she changed the food, the dog truly has full function and all of its hair has grown back in. I guess she saw results immediately. I feed mine a mixture of Puppy Pro Plan and Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul. Maybe to get yours straigtened out, you might want to try the boiled chicken and rice. I sure hope you find the culprit to your baby's misery.
