bile acids test? Is it necessary? Brought my puppy 1.5 month ago, he's 4 month old now, the private breeder fed him beneful dry dog food and after i got him i switched to Acana grain-free food. Do he need bile acids test? when? he's very active and super hyper all the time. o btw once he ate all the 5 lb Acana food i will switch him to castor & pollux organix puppy dry food , which has 28% protein level. . |
At this point I see no reason to have bile acids testing done unless your boy is having health complications that would warrant that specific test. And, it doesn't sound like he is ill at all:) Curious as to why you want to switch his food from the Acana? I don't feed that brand but know several that do and understand it to be a great food. |
Does he seem healthy? Is he eating well? Having any problems? Are you planning to breed him If he's acting ok and you don't plan to breed him, no a BAT isn't absolutely necessary. It would just offer you a little reassurance that he's healthy right now. Mine have never shown any signs of serious illness so none have ever been BAT tested (my oldest is 15 years old). Oh, and I also feed Acana - great food! Why would you want to switch if he's doing well on it? If you're concerned about possible liver shunt though, you could go ahead and have the test done just for peace of mind. Also, he may still be a little too young for a valid test result. I think they recommend puppies be at least 20 weeks old before having a BAT run on them. Congrats on the new puppy! :) Bonny |
No, it isn't necessary, particularly because he isn't having any symptoms. However, I personally would have a hard time putting a Yorkie under anesthesia without one because the vet wouldn't know to alter the protocol. There can be a problem even with no symptoms and no elevated enzymes, so the only reason not to do one is really money. |
