Bad breath!! My yorkie is very healthy and has great teeth (approved by the vet!) but her breath always stinks now! I brush her teeth almost every other day with an enzymatic toothpaste, and she only eats dry kibble. I've noticed it for about the last 6 months, every since she hit 1 year. She's been on Natural Balance and now she's on Solid Gold. When I took her to the groomer's today, I asked her about it and she said all yorkie's breath stinks! Is that true? Any suggestions? I do not give her dental bones because she is allergic to chicken- she gets the sweet potato kind. |
I disagree with you groomer; Joey's breath smells great! Yorkies are known for having tartar problem, and we do things that help eliminate tartar, but I doubt if your dog is having a bad tartar problem so young. Is it possible your dog has a double row of teeth? Yorkies don't always lose all their milk teeth and they need to be pulled. This is usually done during spaying and neutering. The double row allows food to build up between the rows and this can cause stinky breath. I'm guessing this because you say, the problem started about the same time as she got her adult teeth. Some vets don't know this about Yorkies, and many owners have had to tell the vets to pull the extra teeth. |
Nope, only one set! Her teeth really do look great- that's what's so frustrating! I thought it was just her food, but now we switched her two weeks ago to Solid Gold and it's still stinky. She sure is pretty though :) |

And no, Yorkies are not known for breath......however, if the yorkie is proned to tarter, this will definately contribute to bad breath.. |
Capped molar?! Can you explain?? |

Have you tried a probiotic...bad breath can be caused by an inbalance in the digestive track. |
No, but I am SO glad you said something about that. If there was an imbalance, would she have poop that smelled like a cleaning agent? I know that's the weirdest thing to say, but sometimes her poop smells like a chemical. I've taken her to the vet about it, he knows about it and has checked her out fully. I've taken in a stool sample, he's looked at it (two vets actually). No diabetes, no problems. Her poop looks great, just smells funny sometimes. I've googled it a million times, but it always comes up as urine, never stools. It's been smelling this way forever, with many different food brands. |

hmmm I'm going to look into that...thank you very much! :) |
What kind of kibble does she eat? I have read that foods like Science Diet that are full of grain, corn, and fillers can cause bad breath. A good quality food is supposed to make a difference in the breath. |

Are you sure it's her breath? I know that sometimes yorkies can develop yeast infections in the area around their eyes and mouths because of the moisture there. Does she have any tearing problems? Not sure if that helps, I'm just trying to rack my brain for any ideas!!! :) |
If he still has some baby teeth that could cause it. Cesar had 2 extractions when he got neutered because the way the adult teeth grew in, it didn't push the babies out. Cesar eats buffalo blue and his breath does not stink a bit. My friend's yorkie has pretty bad breath and one thing she does is feeds the dog scraps. She will give him chicken and beef here and there. I have no idea what kind of difference it makes, but Cesar never gets any scraps, just Kibble, and sometimes he'll get a wet meal (cesar brand stuff). |
I've never tried this but I've heard about it. Welcome to Teddy?s Pride® Oral Care Home Page Supposed to be odorless and tasteless. If you do try this, please let me know. |
get PetzLife Oral Care Spray. This is what i am using. Look for it on amazon |
Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I am so sorry I haven't responded- I've been away from my computer for a while. She DOES have tearing problems!!!! All the time- I've always assumed it's her allergies, because it's always clear. I will definitely have to look into that- so strange. How would the vet even determine if it's yeast? Just by an antibiotic? I am also going to look into the products you all suggested for her. She's mad at her mommy right now because she just got groomed and has a big ole christmas bow in her hair, for our family pictures tomorrow :) She looks adorable though!!! |
Oh and a quick update on her poop :) I've been giving her yogurt in the mornings with her kibble, which she L-O-V-E-S. Not a lot, but enough that I think it's already making a difference in digestion. |

You mean that she had been on an antibiotic, and got a yeast infection? If so, this is very common. Antibiotics kill all bacteria good and bad, there are some bacteria that are very good for us and keep the yeast fungus from overgrowing, but when we take an antibiotic, the yeast can grow rampant. Foods, like yogurt, have the good bacteria called probiotics and can restore the intestine back to a healthy environment. Glad she's doing better. Can't wait to see the Christmas pictures! |
We are using Tropiclean Fresh Breath Water Additive for a week now, and I noticed that Bear breath is much better. |
I have been using Oxyfresh Pet Gel and their Oral Hygiene solution. I love it and it really keeps her teeth looking great and she never has bad breath. Funny story, So I nanny for a family and they have a little 3 yr old girl. They also have a almost 3 yr old boarder collie. His teeth and breath are well, horrible. And it smells beyond discusting. The other day the little girl said to me, Taycie's breath smells sooo good, Eddy's breath stinks way bad!... of course I laughed. But I guess it goes to show, it must be working! |
