luxating patella Today Kasha gave Mommy & Daddy a big scare. She missed a jump onto the bed and immediately we noticed her favoring her back right leg. She put no weight on it and though she wasn't crying we knew it was her patella again. The vet scared us and told us she has a grade 3 ( even though each knee has only slipped once and slips back in on its own) and was talking about it affecting her ACL and causing arthritis and surgery. Scary. For the time being we were recommended to give her glucosamine and omega 3s (which she gets in her food already) but the vet isn't all that hollistic so she wasn't as knowledgeable as I would have liked about supplements vs meds and surgery (which I wont even consider until it happens frequently and shes in pain) So I'm hoping I can get recommendations about brands & doses of glucosamine as well as any other supplements or words of wisdom. I guess I should also mention that we have steps for the bed and the couch is pretty low but she does love to jump, she's very active and is a baby ... almost 11 months. Thanks!! |
Toby has Grade 3/4 in his left rear leg and ever since he's been on Cosequin (and lost 1.1 lbs) he is back to running, playing, jumping, etc. He does use the doggy stairs up and down the bed but he still jumps up in my recliner and has no issues. It took about 4-6 weeks to notice a difference from the Cosequin but it is great. Ladymom sent me to www.entirelypets.com for the Cosequin. They have a pretty decent price for 90 capsules. I give Toby a tsp. of plain yogurt every day and empty the powder from the Cosequin capsule into the yogurt. He thinks he's getting a special treat every day around 5 p.m. They do sell Cosequin at Petsmart but it is about $10 more than the website I mentioned. I agree on surgery being the last resort but if it would affect Toby's quality of life, I would do it in a heartbeat. |
That is really a good idea about the yogurt and putting powder in it. I just hope he likes yogurt. |
Kasha loves yogurt so it might be a great and viable idea. How did you get the weight off Toby? Kasha is a nibbler and light eater as it is but the vet says she could use to shed a few oz. Thanks! |
