lower calorie food? need to get some weight off Hi Everyone, Cooper & Chloe went to the vet this week for there yearly checkup and I got nailed for letting Cooper gain so much weight! We rotate between Taste of the wild (there all time favorite), Wellness, Acana. I need to know which premium food would be good that has lower calories? A good weight for Cooper is 6lbs. He got to about 6 1/2 last year and while I kept them on the foods listed above (mostly TOTW) with more exercise and really being diligent on my part to put the food up after there meal was done we got some of the weight off, however that is obviously not working any more as he is now up to 7 lbs and too chubby for his frame. Can anyone recommend a very quality food that is lower in calories? Chloe is just starting to get a little on the chubby side so she would be fine to eat the same food as Cooper. |
How much are you feeding? Higher calorie foods simply need to be fed less of, sometimes certain dogs are more prone to gaining weight than others. I would first try to just reduce the amount you're feeding. For reference, my super active 15lb Yorkie eats 1/2 cup per day of Acana (and Orijen) kibble mixed with a bit of wet food and is at a perfect weight for his frame. But I've heard people have had good results with Wellness CORE Reduced Fat for weight loss. Natural Balance tends to be lower calorie and has a lot of options but you're also sacrificing a lot of meat. If you wanted to stick with TOTW, they have a new lamb flavor out now that is lower-calorie and lower protein (I think around 25%). Just some ideas. :) |
Thanks for the recommendations! I feed the recommended amount 1/2 c per day, however the part that is very difficult for me is I have 3 dogs, the 2 yorkie's and a Bichon so I never know who is really eating what. Unless I stand there the whole time because Cooper loves his food while the other 2 are much slower eaters. I guess that is probably the issue, I need to maybe learn to feed one at a time and put it up when they are done. I think Cooper is probably eating his share and some of everyone else's. I have almost completely cut out treats, other than green beans, fruit and cheerios here and there for them. |
