Trimming nails. Help please! I am having trouble trimming my yorkie's nails. I think she had a bad experience at the vet where the vet may have cut too short and the vet brought her to a different room afterwards since she was out of control. He said it might be because we were in the room that she wasn't staying still. She's fine now since that was a few months ago, but everytime I touch her nails she gets away and if me and my mom are trying to do it, she bites viciously! How do you calm your baby down when you're trimming their nails? Or do you go somewhere to do it? |
PediPaw! I use a dog nail file device called PediPaw. It is battery-operated and spins a nail file, so you just have to put the dog's nail into the PediPaw and it will get filed instead of having to cut the nails. Neither of my dogs seem to mind that. My yorkies have never had a bad experience with nail clippings, but they HATE getting their nails clipped, so I just use my PediPaw (you should be able to find it by googling PediPaw). A regular file is not nearly as easy as using the PediPaw, but that could work too. Good luck! |
I've been curious to try out the Pedipaw, but I'm worried that it'll be a waste of money as Lexi HATES getting her nails clipped. How long do the files last? |
I bought my PediPaw last year and I just replaced the original file in it a few months ago. I'm not sure if that's normal, but the file lasted a LOT longer than I thought it would. I haven't had to buy a refill yet since the one I got came with one refill. I would highly recommend the PediPaw or a similar device like it (there are a few different brands). It's easier for me knowing that I can't hurt them with the file (versus if they suddenly move or you slip when you're clipping nails). |
Uni HATED the pedipaw. It also took forever since she had longer nails at the time. The device also gets hot so be sure to give it a rest often. There is training involved to use these files. The sound alone can scare off some dogs. I wouldn't want to use that on myself. many people have had luck with it, but Uni hated it so much. |
Paris didn't like getting his nails trimmed either. I had to desentize him to the clippers. First I just laid them on the couch beside him so he could get used to them. I let him smell them and toched them to his feet but no cutting. After a few days of this I actually cut ONE toenail and gave praise and a small reward. The next day I cut One more and so forth until I could cut Two at a time with much praise and reward. Now he doesn't mind at all. |
