Toothless Treat??? Hey all, We have 5 yorkies, 2 of which were from a rescue that my wife and I volunteer. We adopted Zander Man in May (fostered since January) and in June we took him in for his dental and ALL of his teefies were rotted and bad. Now he is the toothless wonder dog (good thing the cat doesn't know this yet or his chasing days are over!) Anyway, we only get all natural treats for the brood, but always feel bad for Zander because he can't "chew". All the other dogs run and scarf them down and Zander sits and licks and then has to move off as the others start to "sniff" towards him. Any good ideas for treats for a toothless guy? I just hate to give everyone a bully stick...and then just look at him and go...sorry dude...you need dentures. |
All poor guy...What about a frozen carrot, he'll have a great time gumming it! I give mine frozen green beans too, just b/c he loves them not b/c he's toothless;) |
How about baking a sweet potato and giving that to him! Mine love sweet potatoes!:p (Of course they do not get salt or butter on theirs!!) |
Chewie was so excited to get a taste of my squash last night (pre-butter/brown sugar, of course). I let him lick it right off the spoon--makes it seem like more of a treat! He also loves pumpkin frozen in ice-cube trays (and he's not toothless either). |
Maybe Vitakraft Yogurt Drops? They also have peanut butter Drops and Carob Drops. They will be gone fast though and if the others are still chewing on their Bullies, he might still feel left out. Frozen banana? |
In the skin-baby section of the grocery store there are several freeze dried snacks that dissolve quickly -- maybe you could find a few that Zander would enjoy. Also -- in the oriental foods section there are Shrimp fries which are like baked cheetos except they are shrimp flavored. My guys go whacky bonkers for them! They are puffed and crunchy buy dissolve quickly and are easy to chew. |
Wow...these are some GREAT ideas! I just had to print the page and my DW and I headed to the store and picked up some of these items. Thanks guys! |
You could also stuff a kong with plain yogurt and freeze it. |

My Nikki was a rescue and we had to have all his teeth pulled last year. He eats canned food but for treats I give him Cheerio's and so he doesn't feel left out when the girls get their biscuits, I crush them up into small pieces and he has no trouble. I was giving them Zukes mini salmon treats and Solid Gold treats for small dogs and he could eat those. Due to the cost + 4 dogs I have switched to Cheerios. |
