biting legs and feet Lately my Walt (5 months) has been chewing on his legs and feet ALL the time... Does anyone know why? He doesn't have fleas or anything, I've checked... But he chews on them like something's bothering him and I have no idea why. Could it be his hair is too long? I groom him myself and keep his hair pretty short but I'm not really sure how his legs and feet should be... Any advice? Thanks! |
our little Gracie does that and it seems she has air bourne allergys so we have had her on atopica for a while now and it is better we also changed food to see if that made a difference . |
He could have mites, some just use Revolution for a few months as they can escape detection on skin scrapings at the vets... |
my little girl is 4 and a half months and she does the same thing, i just put it down to the fact that I think shes teething lately, Ive checked her loads and she doesnt have fleas or anything.... they teeth between 3-6 months so maybe thats all it is.... |
Thanks everyone! |
What are you feeding him? It could be a food allergy, best check with your vet to be sure though. |

Good luck! |
My vet says has told me that biting the feet can be a sign of allergies. |
I was thinking allergies too, but see my vet to be certain. :) Good luck in finding the problem. |
Thanks everyone! He WOULD have allergies! When we got them I was taking him to the vet every week and I think allergies is the ONLY sickness he hasn't been diagnosed with yet! :( He's on i.d. perscription food now... Poor baby. The first month we had him he was ALWAYS sick with something! He's due for some shots so I'll ask this week when we take him! Thanks, I didn't even think of allergies! I just thought maybe his hair was too long... lol. This is my fist dog I've had to groom! We've always had big labs so in small puppy world I'm a little lost. :) BUT I'm learning! :) |
Max has been biting his feet for a good 6 months. He only chews on his back feet, never his front ones and when he is finally feeling better, his back feet are sopping wet. He has never chewed on them so much that he's made sores or made the hair come out. I, like others on here, assumed it was a food allergy. So, I changed him over to Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet to see if he showed any improvement. He's been on the new for exclusively for 2 months and he is still biting his feet. I know that his feet are really itchy and it's not just boredom because there is nothing I can do to redirect his attention and believe me.... I've tried. His check up is in January so I may have to get some advice from his vet. I guess as long as he's not hurting himself, then I shouldn't be too worried... I just hate to see him miserable. So... if anyone has any ideas... PLEASE share them! Stacey  |
Stacey, I recommend moving up his vet appointment, he is obviously feeling some discomfort from the itching. It could be a food allergy, or it could be environmental, but you won't know for sure until you see a vet. |
Had the same problem with Tessa chewing on her paws...she has allergies...the best medication in the world for it is Atopica...works great and worth the price...good luck... |
Yes My Jewels does the same thing and its alergies |
It's quite possible for dog's to have grass allergies as well. Make sure you protect the paws or wash their feet as soon as they come inside. |
