What kind of food? Help! ok i have read so many things about food.I must be the only one giving their furbaby purina puppy chow. When I took Hayley to the vet 2 weeks ago I asked what was the best puppy food and the vet told me that if Hayley was eating and growing and pooping just fine then purina was fine. Now I am wondering cause noone on here says that they yse purina. If that is not the best for her I will diffently switch her. What should I do? Any advice would be appreciated |
Sherry Dee, What i leaned here is that a food that has Corn as it first ingredient is not the best. We should look for a meat meal as first couple of ingredients. Also avoid corn and meat by-products. If you want to switch to a premiun food you need to do it slowly mixing part of the old food with the new. A couple of good foods are Innova, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul, Natural Balance , Wellness. I feed my Gucci Canidae and Natural Balance Meat rools. Good luck. |
I have two dogs, a lab and a yorkie. i used to feed the Lab Purina until i did a little research. These supermarket bought pet foods have some pretty terrible things in them, from rancid grain to uthinized animals  . I switched the Lab to Nutro and the Yorkie has gotten Nurtro from the day I brought her home. It made a huge difference in my labs coat. She is the shinest one I have ever seen and was not always like that. They say that feeding a natural food with no bi-products can add 2-5 years to a dogs life. And as for treats they are nutro as well or I give them a piece of the Natural Balance roll, wich is also a really good food, but I don''t think they make one specificallly for puppies. Hope this helps. :) |
I agree with the previous post. Gucci's mom gave a great list. I'd only like to add a recommendation to watch out for meat by-products being listed early in the products ingredient list. That indicates they're not using the best quality meat in the product. It's best to choose more natural, wholesome products. I am personally in the process of changing from royal canine for yorkies to chicken soup for the dog lover's soul. My babies were itching too badly ever since I started royal canine this summer. I'm not sure why. Maybe mine are a little sensitive to something in the royal canine. When I read how wholesome and natural chicken soup was, I figured it was for us. Besides, Jig and Joy seem to really like it AND I was amazed that with the canned that you can actually see the veggies and rice in the product. Dawn |
I feed my dogs Royal canin mini bites and Lil casears as a treat. Royal Canin still has corn in it but my dogs dont have any itching problems. They both have nice coat. You can find Royal canin at petco and petsmart where I have trouble finding the other bands. |
I'm back to Royal Canin YT out of desperation.!!!!!!! Gracie will eat most anything (Authority Lamb and Rice, Wellness, Canidae, Chicken Soup, Nutro, etc.,), but not Boodah    , he ate the chicken soup for 2 days then turned his nose up. Royal Canin seems to be the only food he will eat consistently. I have spent a FORTUNE on food this past 6 weeks    , my Petco was out of Royal Canin YT and I tried the Royal Canin toy breed.........bad mistake. Boodah itched and itched. So we're back to Royal Canin YT. |
Royal Canin YT 28 is the food we finally settled on. Heidi was very picky about Iams and others we tried but she liked the RC right off the get go and has been on it 3 years now and is very healthy and we have had no digestive problems as of yet. S/W  |
Whatever food you decide on, mix small amounts it with the purina puppy chow. Then when you have mostly your new food without any tummy problems, your on your way to a healthy baby. Changing too fast can make them sick. I agree, purina puppy chow isn't the best. Royal Canin & Chicken Soup seem to be the best out right now. I would look into them. Good Luck! :) |
Any corn or by-product is not good. I feed Natural Balance and Chewy loves it. I think it's a great option and their meat rolls are so yummy for the doggies. |
