Question for those that feed Wellness Brand I switched to Wellness Core in July or August. I was feeding Merrick Grammy's Chicken Pot Pie before that. My question is this,,do you notice that your dogs eat MORE of this food? The literature I read is that this food is highly palatable to dogs, and it must be true, every time I turn around, the bowl is empty. I have a stainless cannister I keep kibble in, and it holds 8 lbs. 8 lbs of Merrick lasted approximately 4 weeks for my 3 Yorkies, but I am using a while 12lb bag of Wellness Core in 4 weeks  It is costing a little more money, but I am happy they like it. I got away from Merrick because they changed their recipe, and my 3 would not eat the little "vitamin kibbles"...they spit the food on the floor and ate around them, so I figured they were not getting the benefit of the food. I am taking all 3 to the vet next week, Cooper has not gained any weight, but I suspect Darcy and Baxter have gained a little. I am wondering if I should mix this food with something else lower calorie? I also should add that at the same time I switched to Wellness, I stopped giving them the dehydrated chicken strips every night (they each had one), I had changed brands of strips, and I suspect the strips played a part in Cooper's pancreatitis. So now I just give them freshly boiled, trimmed and cubed chicken made by me, so they are getting less calories in treats. I would be interested to hear other's opinions on this. |
I have been feeding Wellness Small Breed for some time now, but I can't help you with your question because I do not offer my dogs free access to their food. However, I feed them 4 very small meals a day and they always seem content. So much so that since Moka's spay she's been gaining weight even on that small amount of food. Between 2 dogs, I think I go through the small bag in a month. Your question actually makes me wonder if I am feeding too much since you have 3. |
Well, certain dogs will definitely eat and eat even if they don't 'need' anymore. Others are better at self-regulating. If they're eating too much, I would stop free-feeding. It's real easy to get a fat dog if they are eating more of the high calorie foods than they need to be. For reference, Jackson is 15lbs and eats 1/2 cup per day of Orijen or Acana (around 430 kcal/cup) along with a little bit of wet food for dinner, and pre-made raw 3x a week. I would say a 5.5lb bag lasts us about 6 weeks for one dog. |
IDK I am saying 12lbs is lasting me 4 weeks for 3 dogs, where 8 lbs of Merrick was lasting 4weeks...I put one cup in their bowl at a time and refill as needed. |
Yeah, I get what you're saying. They probably just like the food better and are eating more. Just because a dog is eating more though doesn't mean they NEED more... they probably just like the food. If you put a Large size of McDonald's french fries in front of me, I'm probably going to eat them all... lol but I def. don't NEED them, but since it's sitting there in front of me and they are so tasty, I'm probably going to. If they begin gaining weight, I would definitely not continue free-feeding. It just sounds really excessive to nearly double the amount of food that they used to eat, esp. when it's a food that they should be given less of. I would just put a certain amount in the bowl that they can have and once it's gone, it's gone. |
