Need Advice-antibiotics or not?
 
All my furbabies are getting their teeth cleaned next week. The women doing it removes the tarter while they are awake. We asked our vet if they need antibiotics since they may have some gum bleeding and he said no since none of them have a heart problem. We have heard that some vets give antibiotics to be on the safe side and even the vet tech at our vets office said she thinks it's a good idea. Now I'm really confused.

Now what???? Do you think its safe to have their teeth scaled without giving them antibiotics?

I would say , No it's not safe. Why take a chance? :D

I have noticed a trend towards not giving antibiotics. There are several reasons for this.

1) The risk of infection is very low in an otherwise healthy dog.

2) The over use and mis-use of antibiotics has lead to the serious problem of drug resistance.

3) Antibiotics are not without their own risks of side effects.


Add in the equation that the actual act of bleeding serves to help flush bacteria from the site of an injury.


Personally, I'm comfortable with my vet's recommendation to not treat prophylactically.

personally i wouldn't get the dental done at all without anesthesia. Yes this person can get the tarter off the part of the tooth she can see, but with the dogs being awake she cannot get below the gum line where most of the bacteria hides. So even if they get their teeth cleaned by her now, they can still have dental problems because the whole dental process cannot be completed while the dog is awake.

:thumbup: I asked the veterinary dentist about non-anesthetic dentals and I was told it is nothing more than a cosmetic procedure that removes only tartar that the person can see and there is no medical benefit. In addition, this procedure of scaling the teeth without a proper protocol can make holes in the teeth subjecting them to fractures and other issues. I did a lot of reading on this procedure and decided it was too risky, the people performing it have no training that I would be comfortable with, and it just seemed overall to be not medically acceptable dental care. I think borders on authorized practiced of veterinary medicine without a license since they "grade" teeth and assess periodontal disease (all that without xrays or a veterinary degree). Scary.

Antibiotics really shouldn't be needed for a simple cleaning just like they aren't needed for people... They are way overused and that is causing a huge problem.

I agree. Non-anesthetic dental cleanings are very questionable.
