Dandruff Problem Hi. My 2 year old yorkie, Sophie, has suddenly come down with bad dandruff and is itching. She is eating expensive premium grain free dog food and I am supplementing with fish oils but the problem persists. I use oatmeal shampoo and blow dry her with a bath about every two weeks. Any ideas on this?? Thanks!! |
Did it coincide w/ anything...food change, weather change, new shampoo, new chew treats. Where is she itching? Does she have red areas on her tummy, arm pits etc? Does she chew/lick her paws? Oh, and WELCOME to YT :)!!! |
Have you had the vet look at her skin to see what he/she thinks? Be sure to wash the shampoo completely out after her bath, then I would try a really good moisturizing conditioner after the bath. Something like an oil treatment might help. |
Joey's breeder believes that the number one cause of dry flakey skin is not rinsing enough after shampooing, so you have to go a little overboard with the rinsing. After you think you are done rinsing, add another minute to your routine. Always use a conditioner, as it conditions the skin as well as the hair. |
This is another thread that was about the same thing: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...olive-oil.html |
Thank you all for your responses! No new changes to behavior or weather, etc. I did try a new conditioner and that's when it happened but I've gone back to oatmeal shampoo and it's still happening. Went to vet a couple of months ago for itching but she thinks it's skin allergies. No red spots on skin, just itching skin it seems. She doesn't really lick her paws. At the time I went to the vet there was no dandruff .I will try a different conditioner and really rinse extremely well. That might help. Thanks again all! |
I think the shampoo thing sounds about right, try that, and maybe look at a conditioner made specifically for dogs. I use Ilse of Dogs, it does a good job. Also do you use any other grooming products. I noticed last time I set Harley to the groomer he was a little flakey after, I'm not sure if they used any other products like detanglers or style stuff. Also if that doesn't help, Do you have carpets in your house? It could be a dust allergy.... One of our good friends has two yorkies who are allergic to dust. I figure it's from their carpets. If you do determine that its a dust allergy, please look to remove the dust source before going to medications, I say this only because my friends opted for drugs to eliminate the allergy, which I'm not to big of a fan of... But try to eliminate the possibility that it's shampoo first, that is more likely. |
A dandruff itchy skin will often become worse with oatmeal shampoo. There are different reasons sometimes for a sudden outbreak of dandruff, one of which could be a problem with the immune system. However, you can try this shampoo, get it at the Vets only not available in pet stores, it should be available where you are, Dermapet Malacetic shampoo. I have cleared up many a dandruff issue with this shampoo. For some dogs you have to use it as their regular shampoo. To start though, you should bath her with it every day for 3 days. Then every third day for three times, then go to one a week for three times. Likely after that you can go to about every two weeks, sometimes sooner if you see her getting dandruffy or greasy. Make sure you rinse well and suds it well when you bath her. Leave it on about 5 minutes before rinsing. It works really well. Here I pay just under $25 with taxes for it. |

I looked up the shampoo mentioned above. Here is a link as well as some reviews: ![]() |
I wonder if the oatmeal shampoo is why Charlie and Natalie is itchy. I will have to try something else. I gave them a bath two days ago and they are scratching like crazy now. |
All good ideas and things to think about. Thanks again everyone. I'm going to try the Malecetic Shampoo and the vet did mention possibility of dust allergy as well so I may work on the carpet. I just feel bad, as we all do, when she's itching and flaky. Sure she doesn't like that. I'll get to the bottom of it. Thankful to have this forum! |
Good luck!:) |
