spay/neuter question Rocco and Dottie were born July 9th. They are scheduled to be neutered/spayed on Dec. 8th. they will be 2 days shy of 22 weeks old. Is this too young for them to be neutered/spayed? My vet told me he likes to do it at 6months. i am worried about being 2 weeks and 2 days short of 24 weeks. |
That is fine the spay/neuter clinic I go to does it as early as 4 months old. |
I just took Mabel in to be spayed yesterday and she is 25 weeks but is only 3lbs 5oz. I worried more about her smaller size then her age - as someone mentioned yesterday, they had their hamster spayed so maybe weight shouldn't be an issue either. I know that vets will spay kittens and puppies sometimes when they are only 8 weeks old. Hopefully someone who is more knowledgeable about this will answer your question. Good luck! |
My vet wanted to do Lulu's when she was just about 4 months old. I told her I wanted to wait til 7-8 months. I wanted Lulu to get a little bigger & I wanted to have any retained baby teeth removed at the time of her spay, so waiting longer allowed her to lose some teeth on her own. She's 7 months old now & I will be scheduling her spay soon. |
I would definitely tell the vet of your concerns. Also, I liked waiting until the 7-8 month mark due to the baby teeth. If some needed to be pulled because they weren't coming out, then you don't need to do a second round of anesthesia IF that occurs. |
Early spays and neuters can cause problems later in life with joints, growth in general, cancers and urinary incontinence. Too late can also cause problems... I would discuss this with my vet. |
I had Raley neutered at 7 1/2 months. He did GREAT!!! I personally did not feel comfortable doing it too early and the vet we use prefers puppies be around 6 months old prior to the surgery. I also think you should just talk to your vet and let him/her know your concerns! Good luck!! |
I've always done it early (4 months) on my larger dogs. The only reason I held off till 6 months for Rhett and 8 months for Scarlett was out of concern for retained puppy teeth. |
Hot Rod was done at 6 1/2 mos and his baby teeth. Maggie had her baby teeth done at the same time as well. they both did fine. Good luck with what you and your vet decide. |

My vet prefers to do little dogs around 9 months, she hates having to pull baby teeth and wants to give them time to come out naturally. She will remove any retained during the spay/neuter but likes to give them a chance. I waited until Rizzo was 11 months old, and we didn't need to have any baby teeth removed, they all came out on their own! :D If you have concerns, bring them up with your vet. My only concern would be if the little lady went into heat before having either one fixed and you had an accidental preg. If nothing else, I'd have the boy done first as a neuter is less invasive and then wait a little while for the girl. But that would be what I would do, they are your babies only you can decide what works best for you. |
Thank you all so much for all the input. I think i will go ahead with Rocco and let my sister decide when she wants to have Dottie spayed. I have been a member on YT for a very short time and all you guys are so wonderful with your help and quick replies. I have already learned so much from you all. Just want to say thank you, and yes this site is VERY addicting!!!:) |
Good luck with Rocco. My yorkie/maltese mix was neutered at 4 months. I just had my 6 month old yorkie puppy, Max neutered yesterday. The vet pulled 3 teeth. He had laser surgery and today, although he's quite sleepy is doing very well. |
That should be fine. I'd probably do it at 5.5-6 months for the girls and wouldn't have a problem waiting with the boys. No reason to do it at 4-4.5 months, but there are good reasons not to, esp. with the girls (spay incontinence in particular). |
When I spoke to my Vet he said that as Csininbaba was small (2lbs) he would rather wait and give her the shot so she wouldn't come into season. She has the next one around Christmas and every 6 months! Really works for us, I don't want her to be operated on yet! |
Getting nervous again So i did decide to go ahead and have Rocco neutered tomorrow as well as Dottie going for her spaying. I and my sister (Dottie's mom) are now gettting nervous again about it. Just wanted to share that with you all, its comforting to know there is somewhere to go when you need to know there are so many others that have gone thru the same issues and offer so much advice... thanks. |
Please post and update us when you can! |
Hope all goes well!!! I am sure it will! We had Seymour neutered at 9 mos. Will probably have Seeger done about the same age. Then any loose baby teeth can be removed also. |
the pups are doing very well. the procedure was on wednesday picked thm up at 4 and they both pretty quiet the rest of the evening. thursday Rocco was alot better and Dottie was still a bit out of it. She is the more energetic of the two so for her to relax for a day is a bit odd. thank goodness Friday they were back to their regular puppy selves!!! Thank you all for your advice and concern.. you guys have really been a big help to me. I have learned so much from you all here on YT. |
Glad to hear the Pups are doing good... I had Riley Neutered 4-weeks ago at 6 1/2 months and he was pretty much back to normal the next day... :) |
Zach is going to be neutered on Dec 18th. He will be 8 1/2 months old. He weighs about 6 pounds. He was screened last month when he was supposed to be neutered but he got sick and we had to postpone it. |
I am having Bella spayed this Tuesday. She was 6 months on the 17 of December. She weighs 5 pounds. I am scared something will happen to her. What should I expect the first couple of days. Will she be hungry? Will she still be able to go outside to potty? How soon after surgery will she start to become active again. I would love to know these answers, so I know what to look for. She sleeps in bed with me, will she still be able to do that after surgery of should I put her in her cage. I don't think she would like that though, if she was alert enough to know. She would think she is being punished. Did your baby's chew at their stitches |
Dottie was spayed 2 weeks ago. she was 22 weeks and 5lbs.she was very quiet and sleepy the night she came home but she was ok.. was not interested in eating but did drink water. the next day she did eat she was just pretty laid back. did not go for her stitches, she did give a lick or two but she did not require a cone. she wore a onsie for 2 days to deter her from licking which again was not out of control. she was pretty much back to her old self on the second day. |
