I found this website, some interesting information contained within. Has your dog been diagnosed by a opthamologist? If not he should be The site below has a link to the board certified opthamologists in the US. Also as this is a genetic disease, the breeder reallly needs to be informed of your pups condition, and that breeding pair retired from breeding. The article mentions some benefits from anti oxidant supplementation to delay the progression of the blindnes. You will need to talk with your specialist about his treatment plan. Thank you so much for responding. I was beginning to think noone cared. I am getting some supplements today, the vet said they couldn't hurt. Thanks for the site it is great! I have googled till my eyes hurt but was looking to my Yorkie friends for comfort and support. Thanks for taking the time to help. |
Also I am getting the book recommended on that site "Living with blind dogs" It looks promising. |

Found a great toy that makes sounds after I throw it so Paris can play fetch still. "Look who's talking frog", Then I restuffed an old toy with a sun chips noisy bag that crinkles and he loves it! ( I better go back and get some more of those frogs they were on clearance.) |
Just one thing I forgot to tell you. You probably already thought of this butiIf there are any stairways in your house, make sure you gate them off so Paris does not accidentally take a tumble. |
No thank goodness no stairs just a small step up to the front door and now I will add the command "step" when we come to it. I just can't believe I didn't know that he was going blind. Now that I think about it there were small signs but now I am noticing it alot more. He's fine, I'm a mess. |
I am sorry to hear about Paris losing his vision. It sounds like he will be able to del with it just fine with your help. |
Thanks Patti. I think he will deal with it better than me. |
I have a poodle who was just diagnosed with this a few weeks ago... the specialist we took her to recommended this supplement OcuGLO Rx | Canine Cataract | Cataract Dog | Dog Cataract Surgery | Dog Vision Problems It is fairly new but the dogs who are using it are showing pretty good results- you may want to discuss this treatment with your vet. Do you know how far along the damage is? On another note- we had a poodle growing up who also had PRA and went blind at a very young age- she adapted very well to it and lived a very happy life anyway. You have to be careful with them and watch them more closely obviously but they really do adapt very well. It is much harder on us as the humans, we put our feelings on them a lot of times. ((HUGS)) Let me know if you have any other questions. |

I found the ocuglo online today. My vet said any supplements would not hurt. He didn't say it would help, either. Now that I think about it, I can look back and see some of the signs, I just didn't equate them with him going blind. Just this week he couldn't find a treat on the seat right beside him. That was really my first clue. I do feel bad but know he will adapt faster than I will. I am looking in to motion sensor night lights for the dark hallway. |

Thanks, I had to leave him alone for a few hours last night to go to my sons house. I was worried about him but of course he was fine. I work from 7-2 every school day but he has always done fine and I know I am worrying needlessly. Going to find the motion sensor nightlights today. |
