Obsessive Licking My Yorkie has picked up this horrible habit of licking his front legs (he will also lick the couch pillows from time to time). He does it SO much that he no longer has hair on his legs. Poor guy, his legs are so dry and red! I've been applying Hydrocortisone Lotion but it doesn't seem to be helping. Does anyone have a Yorkie who does this? What causes it? Can I get him to stop? I'll be taking him to the vet next week but I thought I'd check here first! Thanks! |
Check your dog food. I have read someone else post that they found excessive paw licking when they were feeding food that contained corn. I know it sounds crazy, but see if that could be the case. Here is a quote and a website you might want to read: "Paw licking is triggered by stress from both external and internal factors. Allergies, parasites, environmental causes, psychological events or a combination of multiple reasons can cause a dog to begin licking his paws." Dog Paw Licking and what you can do about it This can really become a bad medical problem, so getting the source identified early is important. You don't want open sores or worse. |
Yikes! I think I'll call the vet and see if I can get an appointment today. |
Just got back from the vet and she's still not sure what is going on. No sign of mites or parasites. Possibly a yeast infection or food allergy. Poor guy is miserable. I hope we figure out the problem soon! |
