All about poop.... I have two questions about poop: 1) How do I get my boys to stay out of the kitty box and 2) Recently I noticed that they have had poop that is not fully expelled. It kind of hangs out and I have to either pull it out or soak their butts in the tub. Also I noticed when this happens the poop smells worst than usual. What's going on? Thanks in advance! |
Well for question number one: Cats are carnivores (all meat diet) so their poop is also the waste from all meat. Doggies love meat....even recycled apparently. We used the spray bottle, but the problem was that we couldn't always "catch" them. Finally we just moved the litter box to a place they couldn't get to. A good choice is to get a "self" scooping one, but LitterMaids are pricey, but we finally got one and I will say that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! Everything that I've have read indicates to build or move something to keep the dogs away. The only other remedies were to cover it (works for big dogs but not Yorkies), sprinkle baking soda, hopefully masking the smell some, or Stop Stool Eating with For-Bid this item from Drs. Foster and Smith. I don't know how well it works, but you put it on the cat food and it's SUPPOSED to make it untasty for the doggie. |
I have five cats as well, and I have to say when I didnt have a covered litter box, the little yorkies would pick out their "snacks" it was gross! Now I do use a covered box, and it has kept them away. Their are so many litter boxes out their now, I would go to a place like Petco or PetSmart and look to see what's out there! Also re: the harder poop, must be their diet. I would look for other posts re: constipation and see what they recommend. Good luck! We bought a hamster playpen and put it around the kitty box. A self made fencing would work also. The poop gets stuck on the butt if the hair around their is too long so its good to keep that area trimmed. Also it seems puppy poop is full of more moisture than adult I really had that problem more often when mine were pups |
I have found that sprinkling alum (found in grocery stores in the spice and baking aisle) on poop will definately stop them from eating it! It works in a spray bottle mixed with warm water, too, for items you don't want chewed. :D |

OP -- as for #2 part of your post..... I would say diet too. Maybe the cat poop!!!!:eek: Are you feeding quality kibble? Staying away from a lot of treats or letting them at the cat food? Good quality kibble, and the poop should be nice firm, dryish tootsie rolls that are easily cleaned up and don't stick to their butt or fur (unless they have the misfortune to sit on one while fresh) :rolleyes: |
They eat Blue Buffalo food. I researched and I thought that was good quality food. Is it? They were on Wellness first and never had this problem. Their hair is always trimmed SUPER short. The poop isn't sticking to the hair, it is literally 1/2 in and 1/2 out and I had to pull the rest out. The poop looked like it was too big to come out comfortable. The definitely do sneak cat food and poop. Unfortunately I am not home all day so I can't constantly scoop or make sure they aren't in the cat food. We have a plum tree and now that the weather is turning they are constantly eating the now prunes, maybe that will unclog them:) |
