Is Acana to high in fat? The only reason I ask this is I had a food samples of The Honest Kitchen Thrive Formula. We tried it out and while I was talking to the rep she said yorkies are prone to bouts of pancreatitis. She said the fat level is 20% so I would advise trying a different formula. Well.. I love The Honest Kitchen I am just finding out that many of their formulas the second ingredient is flaxseed, which Taycie is not able to handle. WAY TO MUCH.. cleans her out.. poor girl So I have really been leaning toward Acana, but after her remark I looked at the lable and it said Grasslands is 17% while Pacifica is only 15%... which to me doesn't sound bad... Any thoughts? |
Some say it is, some say it isnt.. do as much research as you can about the subject and then do what you feel is right for your pets. Alot of people beleive the higher the protien/fat the better because dogs were meant to eat all meat diets and not grains. I am one who is on the fence with that theroy (sp?) I have done lots of research on my own and Im still not totally convinced. Acana is on the lower end of the better foods as far as fat and protien goes but I still cant feed it to my dogs. I have 2 that couldnt eat it, made them ill. It is a great food, great company, and alot of people on here feed it and have had no problems at all. |
I just read this article and found it to be really insightful. It mostly talks about dogs in general. I do know that Yorkies lean a little bit more the the pancreatic side, so a diet lower in fat than a fat rich diet would seem to make more sense. Here's the link and there are some other links that go to other great canine nutrition informaiton as well. Are Dogs Carnivores… or Omnivores? |

good read, thanks for posting it..:) |
I think it's more a matter if your dog can tolerate it or not. I tried Acana and had no problems with Scarlett, but it gave Rhett diarrhea. |

Ya I agree also. I don't think Taycie can handle it. I am giving up on the food trials for awhile and we will stick with our Blue Buffalo. I don't know what else to do, and I think her stomach needs a break. Maybe after christmas I will try something else. For some reason BB works so well for her and about two weeks into a new food I end up with chronic diaherra. At that point it should be starting to adjust with her system.. who knows? Then the minute I give up on the new food and go back to the BB we have nice tiny poops, not stinky and twice a day.. I guess it goes to show no matter what brand it is some works and some doesn't. |
