Please help me to choose : Acana or Blue Buffalo Acana grain-free and blue bufflo life protection small breed... |
Acana, for sure...Blue Buffalo had a recall of some of their canned dog food and baked treats...I don't believe Acana has ever had a recall, and the ingredients, in Acana, are far superior, anyway.. |
Acana :) |
I vote for Acana. I fed Blue Buffalo for a long time and switched to Orijen (like Acana, made by Champion Pet Foods). Nothing against Blue Buffalo, Levi did well on it, but Orijen/Acana is much better. We love Orijen over here. :) |
Can you purchase either of these at Petco or Petsmart? I have to switch from half portion of NOW Puppy and half portion of Wellness. Was trying to switch to Wellness because I wanted a food I could run to the store and pick up. But I think Wellness is giving him soft stools. |

I know you can purchase Blue Buffalo at Petco, but I'm wary after them about reading about some things. See the thread below for more info: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-formulas.html From a link in that thread: "...revealed cases of hypercalcemia secondary to vitamin D toxicosis occurring in dogs that eat a single brand of dry pet food: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Diet, chicken flavor." I was going to buy BB until I did some research. I know a lot of pups do well on it though! It just wasn't for me. Every pup is different with different foods. I've been told it is trial and error. The first food I am trying is Natural Balance L.I.D. Small Breed Bites. :) Good luck in your food search. Out of the two you listed I would go with Acana, but that's just me. |
I would not get the Blue Buffalo. Acana doesn't look too bad. It has 34% Protein. I usually try to watch the protein and look for foods with a max 30% since high protein has been associated with kidney issues in our breed. How big are the kibble pieces for Acana? My picky eaters seem to lean towards the smaller kibble and will at times purposely eat around the larger kibble pieces. My favorite kibble for mine right now is the Solid Gold Wee Bits. It has 28% Protein and even my pickiest eaters seem to like it. I mix foods but the Wee Bits is my largest percentage in the mix. Also, it can be hard to find the better quality foods at the chain pet food stores. You might want to try and look up the smaller specialty pet food stores in your area. If you call them up and they don't carry what your looking for their usually more than happy to order it in for you. They also might have samples on hand for you. I know mine stocks samples of just about everything. Try it before you buy it, if you can! :) |
I tried both Acana and Orijen. My dogs loved, loved, loved it. However, because of the high protein levels it did not agree with my little guy. He had soft stools when on those foods. Although the kibble size for both the Acana and Orijen are exactly the same, they are larger than the small bites. This however did not stop my little ones from chomping down on it. I think its a very good idea to stay clear of the grains and of course both Acana and Orijen are grain-free. Not so sure that Blue Buffalo is grain free (I'm thinking not). Anyway, I had to order these foods on-line. Our local pet food stores did not carry any of the high premium dog foods. I would have to drive about 45 minutes to get to the one pet food store that did carry them - and I'm in suburbia. |
Acana!! All the way! :) |
The one your dog does better on... :) There have been problems with BB as of late, but that is isolated to a few kinds. |
I do think Acana is a better brand overall, however I also do like BB. The recall that they issued was voluntary and at least they issued the recall right away rather than waiting longer or not issuing it at all like some companies have. I still 100% trust their company and feel that they make high quality food and treats. I'm currently using the BB Wilderness varieties for Sasha and she's doing extremely well on them. I also did happen to find a store where I could buy Acana so I do have the option to switch if I'd like, but I can get BB much closer. I may switch her to Acana at some point though. |
i think i will go for Acana....does feeding him less means he will get less protein? I afraid the high protein on acana will affect TomTom's liver ...but since he is a puppy i guess he can have more protein..so my plan is to eat Acana before the age of 1 and then switch to Solid Gold a Wee Bit Bison, which has only 28 percent protein.. correct me if i'm wrong . |
