Acana food i've been feeding kiwi acana sine i brought her home, but lately i realized that she doesn't eat RIGHT away when the food is out (is it because she's not interested in her food anymore??) and she doesn't finish her food. on the bag, it says for her age range (almost 9 months + 2lbs) , she should be given 2/3 cup per day. because she can't finish it i decided to give her 1/2 cup instead, and she still DOESN't finish it. i am feeding her 2x a day right now. once at 9am and once at 6pm. i am also wondering is it because i don't walk her often? I usually take her out for a walk when i get off work and at night around 7-9pm. 15-20mins walk each. so my question is.. should i just free feed to leave her eat whatever she can throughout the day OR switch food brand (even tho acana is one of the best i've heard) OR feed her less than 1/2 cup? any advice would be helpful!! |
She might be bored w/it..try sprinkling parmesan cheese on it, or adding a teaspoon of yogurt (not diet or flavored, that might have artificial sugar), or some put a little unsalted chicken or beef broth on it...I know Acana has several different flavors, so you could try changing up, for variety....I finally had to start feeding Apple raw (frozen packaged) because she got to where she wouldn't eat, and was getting too thin...Now I have to watch how much raw I give her, because she tends to gain weight  |
She's only 2 pounds? If so, 2/3 of a cup would be way too much for her. And 1/2 a cup probably is as well. She probably can't eat that much food. If she is only 2 pounds, I'd think about free feeding her so that she can eat when she needs to and keep her blood sugar level. Measure out how much you put down for her in the morning and measure what's left after she eats at night. That way you can track how much she's eating. Is she at a healthy weight? |
Are you giving 1/2 cup each time or splitting it between feedings? Even 1/4 of a cup at a time is probably going to be too much. I have a 2 pounder right now and, although I free feed, she is probably only eating 1/4 cup a day total right now. She is growing, active, and looks good. She just grabs a kibble or two at a time and takes it to the next room to eat. I never see her stay and eat. I think the dog food bags always say more food than they eat, but not so bad to have it available. Then, when they DO want more, it is there. |
My 5.5 pound very active pup eats between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup of Orijen per day. 2/3 cup sounds like a lot for a 2 pounder. I think they way overestimate the portions listed on the bag. 1/2 cup may even be too much for her. I agree, have you tried mixing anything into her food? If Levi acts picky, I put a bit of grain-free canned food (we use Wellness Core) mixed into his kibble. That usually stimulates his appetite enough to finish his kibble. You could also try free-feeding, but measure what you put in her bowl in the AM and then what is left over at night so you can track how much she is eating. When we free-fed, Levi self-regulated to a little over 1/4 cup a day and maintained his weight. |
We were feeding Acana and that does sound like a lot if your baby is only 2lbs! Two of ours are 6lbs+ and we were feeding a total of 3/8 a day, split into two feedings. Crosley who is 17lbs+ was getting 3/4 a day. |
I posted this on the other thread: 1/2 cup per day seems a lot for a 2lber for sure! My 15lb boy eats 1/2 cup per day, he also gets a bit of wet food mixed in and treats throughout the day but still. The fact that she is still a puppy, it might be okay but if she's not wanting a full 1/2 cup, then she probably doesn't need it. Yes, with foods like Orijen and Acana you really don't need to feed much at all. They are very calorie dense. I believe Acana has 440 kcal/cup or something. You need to take into account a dogs energy level, body type, etc, when deciding how much to feed. I never go by the bag. Jackson is a very active dog! Dog park 1-2x per week where he generally runs for 2 hours straight. Visits to my dads home where he also runs with their dogs alot! Walks every day from 30 minutes-1 hour. In the summer, he swims all summer long. He's in agility classes once a week, etc. If he's super active for the day, I will give him a bit more, maybe up it to 3/4 cup per day. Basically what I do is pour 1/2 cup of kibble into his bowl in the mornings (he doesn't usually like to eat in the mornings) so after dinner-time, I take whatever kibble is left and mix it with wet food for his dinner. |
