Lyme Vaccine? My vet has been pushing me to vaccinate Tink for lyme disease. Since we live in the North East Lyme is a big concern. I have been treated 4 times for lyme myself. Tinkerbell has done really well with all of her regular vaccines. She has never had any bad reactions, but I am wondering if the lyme vaccine is really effective? Do any of you have any opinions or direct experience with this vaccine? Thanks. |
I live in Connecticut about 10 miles from Lyme, where Lyme disease gets its name. Piper does not get the Lyme vaccine. Chipper my first Yorkie had Lyme Disease 3 times. Everytime I had him vaccinated for Lyme within 2 weeks he had the disease. After the 3rd time I finally figured out that Chipper seemed to be getting Lyme from the vaccination. Stopped getting Chipper vaccinated for Lyme and in his 13 years he never had Lyme again. My vet agrees that Piper shouldn't be vaccinated. She is 2 1/2 and she has never gotten sick with Lyme. I do keep her on Frontline Plus during the tick season. |

2 of mine had reactions. So, I dont think I will do it again. They both had whelps all over them and were scratching like crazy. I gave them benadryl which helped them sleep also and by morning they were fine. It scared me to death though so I don't want to do it again. |
My Yorkie Sydney didn't have a reaction. My parents Yorkie Ginger had to spend the night at the vet's office because she had a bad reaction. I don't know if my parents will have Ginger vaccinated again or not. The Lyme vaccination company that our vet uses supposedly will pay for treating Lyme Disease if your dog gets it after getting one of their vaccinations. Our vet strongly recommended it for our area in Northern Michigan. Canine cases of the disease are on the rise. Some dogs have even died from it in this area. |
Probably a stupid question but is the only way a dog can get lyme disease is from a tick bite? I am very leery about giving my dog all these shots if they aren't necessary. |

All three of mine get Lyme shots and I've never had any problems at all. If you are of concern, get a benedryl shot first. I do that with one of my Biewers cause he tends to react slightly (lethargy, tenderness at the shot area) more than my other two. We go in, the tech gives him a benedryl shot. We wait 15 mins then we get the lyme shot. |

Mine don't get it. Last I heard other types of ticks may now be carriers, and I believe the vaccine is only good for 6 months. If you do decide to get it, get it separately, not on the same day as the DHPP or Rabies. I separate them also by 4 weeks. The vaccines do a better job and the dogs seem to handle them better. I generally don't vaccinate for anything that can be easily treated, or any vaccines that are 'new' on the market... like Giardia, the Dental vaccine, the Flu Vaccine for dogs, Lepto: new on the market or the old one is known for causing reactions in small breed dogs, and no Corona, no Kennel cough (Bordatella). |
I've never vaccinated. Jackson had Lymes disease and was treated with 30 days of antibiotics. It seems pretty easy to treat, and my vet never recommended the Lyme vaccine to me. She just asked if he had had it. Jackson had a reaction to Lepto before so I'm always cautious with unnecessary vaccines even though he's done fine with rabies, and DHPP and bordatella. |
Thanks for all the advice everyone. I have decided against the vaccine after doing some more research and disscussing it with my vet. I will have Tink tested for lyme if I have a reason to suspect it and treat if needed. |
