For those that Titer After the puppy shots and 1 yr booster: Do you Titer yearly? For distemper and parvo only? And for those who have been doing the titers for awhile, how often do you end up needing to vaccinate based on the results of the titer? I.e does it work out to on average never needing to vaccinate again, every 5 yrs, every 3? I'm curious as titering is my plan instead of over vaccinating, but need to know what to titer for each time (rabies vac is mandatory every 3 anyway), and how long you are finding it ends up being before titers show you should vaccinate again. Thanks. |
I'm very curious also, because I need to make an appointment for Coco's yearly checkup and I know she is up for her vaccines. I know that it is mandated that rabies be given, but I would like to avoid having to give her the others, so I too will be asking to have her titered. |
I too would like to know. Zhoie is scheduled for teeth cleaning this Friday 11/05. She will be 2 in Jan. and I don't know if he will say if there are an vacs do. Anyone know? Sorry, the vacs part I'm not sure about and really nervous to have her cleaned again. She had it done at 1 yr and did just fine....still freaks me out though. |
Excellent post. I have been doing titers on Vinnie for at least 6 years now. He gets his rabies shot (because that is required), but we do a titer for distemper and I think one other thing. Since we've been doing the titers, he has had sufficient antibodies such that he has not required any shots other than his rabies (and we do bordatella when he goes to get groomed). I started doing the titer test with Vinnie because he got really sick after a batch of shots one time. I also felt like the shots were just a little overboard, given his size. I would highly recommend the titer testing not only for dogs, but for people too. I believe in immunizations, but we do know there are concerns with overimmunization, so avoiding shots whenever they are not needed is probably a good thing. |
Thank you, this info helps alot. I really didn't understand what titers showed and what they determined. |
Thanks for the info Andrea. |
Vaccined for DHLPP-C and rabies (clueless at that time) in '06. Severe reacdistemtion likely from lepto. Titered for distemper and parvo in '07. Distemper was low already (immunity was probably negated by having so many vaccines the year before or something). Boosted distemper alone. Parvo was fine. Titered for distemper and parvo in '08. Distemper low again (right on the line of needing to revaccinate). Vet said we could wait a year to boost, but would probably have to do it every other. Then '09 I knew we were supposed to be boosting distemper, but really didn't want to. I know she either is or isn't protected by this time, and if she isn't, another vaccine isn't going to suddenly protect her. So I really just wanted to be done with distemper and parvo altogether. Her vet agreed to stop. so we are done with all of that. For us, titers were a waste of money, made things more confusing, and I realized that I wasn't going to go with what the results indicated we should go with anyway. Many people have had success with them. Not something I really recommend... |
What is "titer"? I have asked about this before but I haven't received an answer. You can either e-mail me directly or send me a link so I can learn about this. Thanks, Cherie |
Titers are blood tests to check immunity to diseases such as rabies. (Maybe someone else can explain this much better.) Piccolo gets titers for everything, since she cannot have another vaccine. So far, so good... It makes me feel relieved, if nothing else. |
I have not titered at all, I choose to go with Dr. Dodd's theory that with 3 rounds of puppy shots and the one year booster, toy breeds are most likely immune for life. I have also been told by many different vets that titers may not be a reliable source for immunity. A low titer doesn't mean they don't have immunity and a repeat vaccination will not necessarily make that titer result increase. And Dr. Dodd's protocol says DHPP is a 3 year vaccine at the least. I will continue vaccinating my Angel only for rabies every 3 years and my vet agrees with this. Due to Sissy's Protein Losing Enteropathy, my vet and I have agreed she will not receive another vaccination during her life. |
Roxy and TJ had their puppy vaccines from the breeder, and against what I told my Vet at that time, their last puppy shot did include the Lepto (still mad about that..) They received their booster at 1 year and I think one more a year later. Rabies is every 3 years. I think I titered 3 years ago for Distemper and Parvo, all was fine. I won't be doing it again unless my Vet insists on another titer. |
