Pre-Anesthesia Tests Hey everyone! I just made an appointment for Roxy to get spayed in a few weeks and was wondering if I should have the pre-anasthesia blood work done. Some people say it doesn't have to be done since she's a pup but others say yes do it. This is my 1st puppy so I wasn't sure what to do. Any advice would be great! |
Yes, yes, absolutely get bloodwork done! It should be done on a puppy or any pet who has never gone under anesthesia before. My vets require it. It will tell your vet a lot about her organ function and alert him to anything that might anesthesia difficult. Yorkies especially need pre - op bloodwork done since the breed is prone to liver disease. Anesthesia is processed through the liver. Please read this: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html Discuss with your vet beforehand what type of anesthesia he will use. Propofol and isoflurane are the safest for toy breeds. |
You DEFINITELY want to get the blood work done. It could find potential problems that would make putting your pup under anesthesia very dangerous. |
DEFINITELY!!!! You wouldn't want to risk finding out the hard way there was a problem. |
Absolutely. |

It is not that expensive and it sure gives peace of mind. In house pre-surgery blood work on my Jack Russell was only $56! We decided on some more extenive tests for Ben, my yorkie, and they had to be sent out, the cost was $128 -- so even at that, small price to pay to be safe. |
Thanks for the advice everyone! It def is worth it! |
Personally I always require my vets to send bloodwork out as in house values are not as reliable. Sometimes we do in house blood work with a send out or "vet screen" just for accuracy. When Teddy was neutered we did pre anesthetic testing and also did a cardiac ultrasound to make sure his heart was in good shape as well. The costs will depend on the test ordered. We just spend $111 for a full wellness screen with urinalysis for Daisy. The test for Teddy was around the same with another $40 for the heart ultrasound. |
