Yorkie Allergies Hi everyone! I have a 4 month old male yorkie. I have noticed that he has started to itch and sneeze more frequently. The last week has been pretty bad with most of the itching around his ears and legs. His skin isn't dry or flaky, and I have him on his monthly flea and tic medicine. I am not bathing him very often (every other week) because I didn't want to dry his skin out. When I do bathe him I use an oatmeal dog shampoo. Could this be food allergies? I'm using regular purina puppy chow. I'm new to the forum, and any thoughts would be helpful! |
Well, it could be food allergies or they could be environmental allergies; often they go hand in hand. This is a bad allergy time of year for my Westie as well. His vet prescribed him OTC Zyrtech and a prescription, Cortisone Shampoo, which soothes his itchy skin. That, combined, with a food change, has helped his allergies a great deal. I did notice that he sneezed A LOT yesterday; but still is not having the terrible itchy skin. I'd probably consult my Vet and consider slowly transitioning to a higher quality food. Good Luck! |
Hi there and welcome. I don't have any advice for you on the allergies, but just wanted to say hello. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be on here soon to guide you. As for the purina puppy chow - you will find, by reading a lot of the information on YT, that this is not the best food and you should slowly switch to a better food without any fillers, by products and preferably grain free. Good luck to you. |
Tallulah's vet put her on a very small dose of children's Benadryl liquid. She has runny eyes, irritated ears, and sneezes a lot. And yesterday she started scratching a lot. We examined her for fleas just in case - not a sign of them. |
This is a really helpful link that helps explain how to approach allergies: Pet Care Library: Allergies in Dogs Did the itching start when you switched him to the Purina? Or, did you notice if the itchies started when pollens increased in your area? (see www.pollen.com - and enter your zip code) |
Thanks Guys! This has been so helpful. Switched little Izzo to a much better food today. The vet suggested the children's benadryl, so we'll give that a go tonight. The itching did flare up this week as our pollen count rose. |

If you want to give something only once per day, options for dogs are Claritin and Zyrtec :). |
