Canine Thyroid Support Has anyone ever used Canine Thyroid Support for their little ones? I had my boy's thyroid tested because he seemed to be so overweight and he does not eat anymore than my tiny little girl. I cannot cut back on his food anymore than I have. He is on a diet given to him by nutritionist, Susan Davis. My vet said his tests didn't show a thyroid problem, but some of his numbers looked like they could be headed towards abnormal...she suggested that we put him on a natural supplement (Canine Thyroid Support - bovine thyroid) to try to head the progression off. He has no hair loss or skin issues at this time. I was just curious to see if anyone has tried this supplement and if there have been positive results. Thanks. |

One of our other member's Yorkie developed thyroid issues on a diet from Susan Davis because it lacked salt (iodine): http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...id-issues.html |
I have his lab report with me.... TSH was 0.05 - normal is 0.05-0.42 T4 was 0.4 ug/dL L - normal is 0.9 -3.9 pH was 7.58 - normal is 7.31 - 7.42 Sodium 162 - normal is 144 - 160 HCT 55.8% H - normal is 37 - 55 These are the things that were a little low or high..everything else was within normal range. He has no other symptoms at all. We have tried diets and exercise and he can not lose weight and the vet says he is definitely overweight! That is why we ran the the thyroid panel. He does not have excessive hunger or thirst. He does not pee excessively. He does tire easily, but I think it's because he is overweight. No skin or hair issues...he has a beautiful coat. The diet he is on is Stellas and Chewy's raw chicken mixed with extra green beans and pumpkin...so it it not homemade and should have enough sodium. In fact, his sodium was a tad bit high. Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated as all of this is foreign to me. My vet suggested trying 1/8 teaspoon Canine Thyroid Support twice a day with his food... |

Is he on a diet from Susan Davis or Stella & Chewy's? Iodized table salt contains iodine. He could easily have high sodium and still have an iodine deficiency if his diet doesn't contain enough iodine. Besides iodized salt, kelp is also a good form of iodine. Iodine Requirements & Deficiencies in Dogs I just brought it up when you initially said he was on a diet from Susan Davis because of Marcie's experience. Was his thyroid panel done in house or sent out? In house thyroid panels are not that reliable. It's best to send it out to a vet school. MSU is an excellent one. |
Sorry for the delayed response...I had some errands to run! The diet that Susan Davis put him on was Natures Variety Raw mixed with green beans and pumpkin. I had to change it to Stella and Chewy's raw because the bone fragments were smaller and I worried less...so essentially it is the same diet she put him on just a different brand of raw. The Thyroid panel was sent out to IDEXX. The results are 4 pages! My daughter is an Emergency Medicine Physician and I will have her look at the results this evening, but usually things are so different in dogs and in humans that it is not a huge help. I have never used any kind of kelp - do I get that from a health food store? Thank you for you links. I have a baby girl that had a shunt and MVD...we took her to Dr Tobias and had that repaired, so I have learned all about shunts and liver disease. This thyroid business is all new to us! |

Thanks for your advice. My vet suggested we try this bovine thyroid (Canine Thyroid Support) for a month to see if there is any change. I was just curious to see if anyone else had positive results. I always hate to try anything new with these little ones. I was a little hesitant since he had no other symptoms at all! |
