Water in ear from bath
 
I gave Brody a bath yesterday and must of gotten water in his ear.:( The poor guy has been trying to get it out and it's obviously not working. Prior to his bath his ear wasn't bothering him at all.

I'm going to make an appointment with the vet to see if there is anything they can do for him. I figured by now he should not be shaking his head. His ear isn't red or smelly or hot to the touch and he let's me manipulate it, I'm almost positive it's not an infection.

Anyone else experience this?

It's something that helps dry out the ear after it gets wet to prevent infections down there. Some cleaners have this property. It will probably say something along the lines of "cleaning and drying agent."

I probably wouldn't feel comfortable trying to put anything in his ear. I don't want to cause any damage.

A couple of drops of alcohol will dry out the water.

In the future, I'd keep a ear cleaning solution with a drying agent on hand. Apply it after every bath. The one I've found that works the best at keeping ears healthy is Vet Solutions. You can purchase it at revivalanimal.com or do a google search for the best prices.

There are different types of infections, some of different bacteria. Just because the ear isn't smelly or hot doesn't mean he doesn't have an infection.

I contacted my vet and he said that I should place a cotton ball (not force) in the ear canal and manipulate the ear. He also suggested the alcohol as well. He said if neither of those things help, he would see him tomorrow.

This happened to Toto and she did develop an infection. I use earplugs every time she has a bath since then and haven't encountered this problem again. My vet also discovered that instead of plucking the hairs from her ears that the groomer was just using sharp pointed scissors and clipping them way down in there. This caused a mat of hair which kept the water from coming out, i.e., the infection. I now only allow my vet to pluck her ears ... no more infections and certainly no more groomer! ;)

I don't know how a cotton ball would work. Alcohol is automatic drying agent. While it does the job, it does not have acidifers to properly acidifiy the ear canal. The longer you leave the water in the ear canal the more you risk an infection. If neither of those things help, why wouldn't he see him today. Ear problems can elevate quickly.

Me either.

I'm just a fanatic about ears. I know how uncomfortable a dog feels, and how it affects their well being. I always keep Otomax on hand, just to nip a possible infection in the bud.
