Picky Eater! I just brought home my baby a week ago and I'm having trouble getting her to eat out of her dish. She likes to pick up a piece of food, put on the floor next to her bowl then eat it a few minutes later. Today, she didn't eat at all until I put the food in my hand. After eating for a second, I put her in front of her bowl and she refused to eat. I don't want to make a habit of hand feeding her. Does anyone know a way to encourage her to eat out of her dish? Thank you! |
Picky eater Hello; I know the problem well and had it with my previous dog. (No longer an issue with my current dog, who LOVES his food!!!) The 'picky dog' also would take her food onto the carpet and eat it there at first, but later did eat from the dish. Is it possible she just does not like the food?? One trick that worked for me was advice from YT, and that was to sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on the food. Another trick I used was to mix the kibble (if that is what you are feeding) with a little canned food or with mixed-in soft treats that she liked. Does she go for any food and /or treats? Have you tried Nutrical (spelling???) to give her some energy when she is not eating much. She is still probably getting used to her new home and may well improve with a little more time. I do understand how bad you feel that the little girl is not eating well, but I am sure all will be OK soon. Good Luck and enjoy the new pup. |
Thank you so much! I followed your advice today and put a little bit of parmesan cheese in with her food (so little you wouldn't actually be able to tell there was some in there) and it worked! I am going to try it again tomorrow to see if this will help her eat and get the nutrition she needs. I really appreciate it and I am enjoying/loving Ella more each day! |
Picky one Hi: Hooray, lets hope the cheese thing continues to work and Ella becomes a good eater soon as I am sure she will. Its all about the smell it seems and the cheese must smell good to them. However, these little ones are clever little tykes and can soon learn to get some other goodie to make them eat. I found that something worked for a bit and then I had to try another tease to make her eat. Also go easy on the treats as picky eaters would prefer to eat them rather than real (good) food. LOL. Yorkies are too smart and learn how to get us to do their bidding very soon. :) But as you say, they are so sweet and lovable and we will do anything for them and their happiness. picky eater This is classic I think for some of these dogs. Just be glad you don't have other slightly older and larger dogs as well. We have two Shih Tzu and had one Yorkie. They all ate the same food at the same time each day. Yoda wasn't able to eat as fast as the others and I would have to pick up his food and put it up or in my lap. Needless to say eventually I got into a very bad routine (but one I would gladly do again) of feeding Yoda out of my hand. Because of his size, he obviously wouldn't eat very much at a time and sometimes he would decide he was hungry at 10:00 at night and he would end up in my lap with me feeding him piece by piece. :D Yoda was the smallest dog in the house but he was the most vocal and you know how their bark can irritate you at times. As a matter of fact, Yoda ended up "running" the house to the point that everything revolved around him. :aimeeyork Funny the things we do for our pets but I am sure it will work out for you. to entice the appetite you can try adding a little of solid gold canned green tripe. dogs love it. |
Never used green tripe but I occasionally use non-salted cut green beans for treats for all of my dogs. Healthy and doesn't contribute to their waist line. |
