How often to feed your Yorkie?? Hi: I wonder how often to feed your dog. Mine is 9 pounds 2yrs old and always hungry! (All is well with systems from recent comprehensive tests when I got him, so no worms etc. LOL) I feed kibble 6am, 12 noon and 5pm - with a small amount at 7.30 for the night. Total 3/4 cup for his weight and keeping his weight constant) I feed no people food and a few healthy treats. I feed more often as when I first got him he would vomit a little bile if not fed for some time. Perhaps it was more nerves and new home? I would really like to reduce number of feeds, but he seems to need food often. If I feed him more kibble for each of say 2 feeds will he get overloaded and vomit as he eats all very fast ??? I know I could experiment, but as he is so healthy and eats his food so very well, I don't want to risk it if I can help it. I would appreciate input from any one with similar experience and solutions. Thank you very much. P.S. He pees and poops regularly and is fine on all that, and walks a lot. |
I feed Poppy around 3-4 times a day depending on her appatite. I usually put her food out around 8.30am 12pm 3pm and 6pm, but sometimes she dosnt eat that much and will only have 3 bowels a day. :) |
I feed Sasha twice a day...in the morning whenever we wake up and then around 5pm. She gets a few small "potty treats" throughout the day and then usually a bigger treat closer to bedtime to hold her over for the evening. If you'd really like to decrease the amount of feedings you're providing for him, maybe you could try getting one of those food bowls that's specially made to help slow them down when eating (they look like a lego almost I say lol) since you said he tends to eat really fast and throws up. I've even heard of people sticking in a tennis ball or something to help slow them down. Of course that wouldn't work if the dog likes to play a lot lol...just a suggestion! |
Feed Thank you both for your kind suggestions and experiences. I am not crazy, as Rachael also feeds 4X as I do. LOL. My furbabe does not throw up cos she eats fast now, but I thought he might if I fed him much more at each of only 2 feeds. But thanks for the idea of the 'slow eat' bowl, I could try that. Perhaps I could try 2 feeds am/pm and like you just feed treats mid-day and late evening. Thank you again! |
Jackson is 2 years old and a healthy 15lbs and gets 1/2 cup per day. Sometimes I split it up and give him 1/4 in the AM and 1/4 in the PM, other days I give him all of it at dinner. So he either gets 2 meals per day or 1 meal per day (mixed with a tad of wet food). He's not a big morning eater. About 3x a week, he gets Primal raw food in replacement of breakfast. |
How much to feed a 12 week old yorkie puppy Hi, I'm new here and new to owning a yorkie. I have a 12 week old male yorkie (Hershey) that weighs 2.5 lbs. How much should he be eating in a day? I am feeding him 3 times a day right now but leave a small amount of dry kibble out during the day while I am at work. He will sometimes eat this but not always. Thanks for any help. |
Maxine is 13 1/2, 7+ pounds, and get fed 2 times a day. One Tablesoon of wet, and some dry each meal, I believe around 1/4 cup as well as a Small Glucosimine Tab mixed in. She is health! We f=do not over feed her, she just has a budda Belly, but you can feel her ribs. Cute in her own chubby little way. |

Food Hi Thanks all for the info. I am amazed your >12 pound dogs eat so little (around 1/2 cup per day). The amounts given on my dog food packs suggest 3/4 cup a day for a 9 pound dog - as mine is (he keeps a constant weight on 3/4 cup). It must depend on the food brand. I use California Natural and/or Blue Buffalo Chicken/rice. It is easier to feed less when the dog is not like a vacuum cleaner for food. LOL! :animal36 |

High quality foods provide more nutrients and vitimans and calories and can cause a weight gain a bit easier. |
I feed twice a day, 1/2 cup total for my 10-pound adult, but he also gets training treats throughout the day. If I treat a lot, I cut down on meals. Sometimes the treats are his kibble. Since all dogs are different, I weigh mine regularly to give me an idea if I'm under- or over-feeding, then I adjust accordingly. Of course, that only works for adult weights. |
Food I agree all dogs' needs are different as are the types of foods, and that the pack amounts are only very rough guidelines. The real test is their health and constancy of weight. I tend to feed very few treats and more kibble. The foods I feed are, I hope, good quality but have relatively low protein content. (21-24 %). I am so grateful my current dog is not a picky eater, but it is hard to limit the food to an always hungry dog! :animal36 Thank you every one for all the useful comments, and for your interest. :) |
Mine eat 3 times a day. 3 am (Pixie won't break the habit), 11 am and 7 pm and a few little treats. |
Food. WOW!!! I don't like the idea of the 3 am feed. LOL!!! But habits sure are hard to break. Don't tell mine or he might think it is a good idea to have a mid NIGHT snack as well. My what we do for these furbabes but we luv em. |
