What kind of chew?
 
I have a 19 week old who needs to chew. The bully sticks give her loose stools :eek: and I have heard that raw hide is toxic. She is chewing on everything and I want to give her something that won't make her sick. Any suggestions? :confused:

My girls like the Himalayan chews....Bridget was (and still is) a power chewer - I think these chews helped keep my dresser from becoming a night-stand! They last forever!!!

LOL! Too funny! My dining room table will be a coffee table soon! Thanks for the info, what are Himalayan chews??

Jackson loves Himlaylan chews. Not as much as bully sticks, but they're his second favorite. I like them because they last forever! They can chew and chew and barely get any off. So it's great. A medium size lasts my 15lb dog a month or more.

Also, have you tried Nylabones? I know some don't recommend them, and Jackson doesn't like them, but they pretty much last forever and are good for puppy chewers.

I have found the same problem with the bully sticks. They make my dog vomit. This is contrary to everything I have read here. The majority of people like them. I would not give them to my dog. I've thrown the ones I bought out. I do have luck with flossies, NOT BULLY STICKS. Flossies and bully sticks are not the same thing. They sell Flossies in smaller pet stores, or on Amazon. My Gio tolerates them and loves to chew on the flossies.

sorry to say my Patrick has the jaws of a shark and has removed large chunks from his Nylabone. The new puppy thinks that Nylabones are only good for playing fetch :) Patrick also LOVES bully bones but he gets sick from them and he once removed a long stringy piece off one 6" bone which got stuck in this throat. It was a good thing that I was keeping an eye on him when ate those yummy sticks. I had to pull it out to keep him from choking. *sigh* he needs something to chew.

I buy beef shanks, make a pot of soup and give the cleaned bones to the kids. I know that there is a lot of controvery about giving "cooked bones" because of splintering, but I have never had this problem with the shanks. I also give beef rib bones. When the bones get disgusting and slimy I run them through the dish washer. Some of the bones are several years old and I have only had to discard a couple because of wear. With the shanks, you can rub peanut butter, cream cheese, etc. in the middle for an extra treat.

Antlers are another good chew treat that last forever. If you know a hunter ask for extra antlers, cut the sharp tips off and then to 7" - 8" lengths.

Do the antlers have a smell & do they make yours very thirsty? I also have to get away from the bullies b/c it makes Snick so thirsty that he drinks a ton of water and has an occasional pee-pee accident in the house when we are not home. :rolleyes: I need to give the Himilayans anothet whirl....

The antlers that I use have very little smell. My neighbor who hunts keeps me supplied. I forgot to mention that I run them through the dishwasher to sanitize them before letting the kids chew on them. I haven't noticed excessive water drinking after chewing sessions.

Bridget loves the bones - but I can't find them here - the butcher in our stores refuse to cut them because he says they are a safety hazard when they are being cut!! All I can find is the really large pieces! But you're right - they do last forever!

I was going to suggest antlers too. I've only been able to find antlers in one place, an independent pet store in Chapel Hill. They have both deer and elk antlers. Levi loves his antler, it literally barely wears down at all, and it doesn't smell at all. Doesn't seem to make him thirsty. He still prefers a bully stick, but he does love his antler too. I've never tried the Himalayan chew with him.

Sorry -- but Flossies are the same as thing as bully sticks -- just curly. Here is an excerpt from bestbullysticks.com
"We really don’t have to say much about this treat at all because it sells itself. For those of you who are use to Flossies and have pooches that absolutely love them, here they are. We have not met a dog yet who has turned down one of these tasty treats. Merrick Flossies beef tendons are a curly bully stick that come from USA cattle. They are great for small or big dogs and are 6″ to 8″ in length. Like all curly bully sticks these are great for creating natural friction in you pooches mouth which makes for pearly white teeth!"

I know most sites like to just call the Flossies a curly beef tendon. Sure it is a tendon, so is a bully stick. It doesn't matter if it seems gross, they are still good for our pups and most seem to like them.
