Which is better: Orijen or Acana? I feed my dogs raw food because we didn't have good foods available here until recently. Now, we have Acana and Orijen available. While we are staying on raw food for their dinner, I want to put them on kibble for breakfast. I want to do this for the following reasons: I feel the variety will do them good, I think they need the kibble to clean their teeth, they enjoy eating kibble (we tried an Orijen sample) and it's more convenient for me in the morning. I know that Orijen is grain-free and Acana not, but which is better for Yorkies? I think someone mentioned before that Yorkies do better on food with grain... Can anyone help me out? |
IMO, it's really not breed specific. I mean, theoretically, many would say all dogs would do better on higher protein (rather than higher grain) bc of how their digestive systems are designed, the enzymes they release, and their ancestry. However, that generalization doesn't really apply to all dogs. One dog will fare better on higher protein, another may fare better on higher grain. So, it kind of depends on your dog...as well as your preferences. I happen to feed raw, so I generally like a higher protein. I don't think you could go wrong w/ either Orijen or Acana...Champion Foods makes good stuff :). |
Acana has a grain-free version too. I have found Orijen to be more rich than the grain-free Acana. They are both under the same parent brand (Champion). My understanding is that Acana is the "value" version of Orijen because it has less meat (and less protein, if that is a concern for you) and fewer types of meat. That said, both are great, high-quality kibble. Orijen ended up being too rich for my dog even after a very gradual transition from her previous food. She did wonderfully on the grain-free Acana though. |
I guess what I need to know is: Would more grain lead to firmer stools? I've noticed that they aren't as firm as they should be, in the last few weeks. They have now been on Orijen for breakfast for the last week and their stools still aren't firm. I think I'll try Acana and see if this maybe helps? Logically, it should because it contains more fiber? |
I would think no...I think more protein=less frequent, more compact stool. |
To me, they're both GREAT kibbles. And Acana Provincals is their grain-free line which includes Grasslands, Prairie Harvest and Pacifica. They don't offer their non-grain free lines here in the US. I feed Grasslands and Jackson loves it! We've been feeding it since March or so and he still seems to really enjoy it. I do mix some wet food as well. But he usually has firm small poopies and goes about 2 times a day, sometimes 3 if he had extra treats or bully sticks, etc. I highly recommend either of the foods, Champion Pet Foods is the best out there, IMO. :) |
We have fed Acana before. We chose if for a number of reasons--one of which was because it is made in Canada. We were very happy with it! |
Levi eats Orijen Adult and he loves it. When we were switching over, I bought sample bags of both Orijen Adult and Acana Grasslands. He liked both, but was more enthusiastic about the Orijen, so we went with that. His stools are small and firm. The only issue we've ever encountered with Orijen is that it is very easy to overfeed. Levi weighs about 5.5 pounds and eats about 1/4 cup daily whereas with his old food (Blue Buffalo), he ate between 1/2 and 3/4 cup daily. I think I was seriously overfeeding him for a couple of weeks while we were switching, but we did manage to get the portions under control. |
We finished our Orijen sample last week and we started with Acana over the weekend. I must say that they are more enthusiastic about the Orijen... they don't seem to have the same urgency to eat the Acana, lol. So, we'll be buying a big bag of Orijen soon :) |
