Overweight My puppy of 6 months net week is almost 8 lbs. He is overweight. I am planning to cut the feeding to two meals a day. My puppy is very picky and I would mix green tripe and his keeble (one fourth cup per meal with tree or four spoonful of green tripe). If I am not mistaken the tripe is very rich making him gain weight. He does not want to eat kibble food after eating prescribed canned food due to diarreah. As a result he bacame a picky eater. Would anyone agree to reduce the meals to two per day. I take him for walks twice a day for 30 minutes. Your input is appreciated.:) |
Is he TRULY overweight, or just a bigger Yorkie? You should be able to see a nice 'tuck' under the ribcage, or at least feel one. Jackson is 15lbs at 2 years old and is at a perfect weight, he's just a bigger Yorkie. He eats 1/2 cup per day total, plus wet food mixed in and treats. Jackson does get quite a bit of exercise. Two meals a day should be absolutely fine for a 6 month old. Sometimes I only feed Jackson once a day. I would try feeding 1/4 cup in the AM and 1/4 cup in the PM and see how he does. When you mix in wet food, just do a tiny bit and add water and stir it around. |
Did your vet tell you he was overweight? He's still a puppy. |
Bailey is 3 years and 7 lbs - I feed her twice a day (always have). I feed her one overflowing tablespoon (not measuring spoon but everyday tablespoon - the larger of the dinner spoons) of homemade raw (hamburger, cottage cheese, rice, etc). - twice a day. A 1/4 cup of kibble plus 3-4 spoonfuls of tripe seems like a lot to me. We battle weight problems too - it is very difficult to feed Bailey what seems like so little - but believe me, its more than plenty - and we have to monitor the snacks too. I jokingly call her my 5 lb yorkie in a 7 lb body :) Good luck! There are so many finicky eaters - its kinda good to hear about a hefty eater! :) |
I think feeding a 6 month old puppy twice a day is fine, but I agree with the others that you need to be sure he is really overweight. Check with the vet an/or feel for ribs. Hard to put a pup of less than a year on a diet. I had to check on tripe. I thought it was a high fat food, but a whole cup is only 140 some calories, 50 some fat calories. So, if he is only getting a few spoons full at a time, it is probably not that many calories. How many times a day have you been feeding? Or do you free feed now? I guess what I am looking for is how much of a reduction are you talking about? I actually think 1/4 cup twice a day is a small amount for an 8 pound puppy. It does depend on the food you are feeding though. What kibble are you using and what does it recommend for the weight your pup is now? What about snacks/treats? Are you giving them in addition to the food? I would cut treats or exchange them for baby carrots and green beans before reducing kibble. Another topic to consider is exercise. Do you take your pup for walks a couple of times a day? Maybe increase the duration of walks to burn off extra calories. |
