Does anyone know about EVO?
 

I am trying to find a food for Rosie to switch from the Bil Jac I was feeding. I found out that Bil Jac does not have a good rating. So, I am trying to put her on a better quality food. I tried Natural Balance Potato and Duck, which has a 5 star rating I believe, but she will not eat it.

I have been given some samples of EVO Turkey and Chicken formula small bites. It is a food with a 6 star rating; however, I noticed it has a lot of protein in it. Does anyone know anything about this food?

EVO is a really rich food and is probably not the best to switch from a low quality food like Bil Jac to. EVO was also recently bought out by Proctor & Gamble (Iams, etc) so a lot of people are unsure what will happen to the food and if it's trustworthy anymore...

Currently, Champion Pet Foods is pretty much the top food to feed. They make Orijen and Acana! Acana is a bit lower protein (33 percent) but still very high in meat content and a really great food all around. :) Orijen & Acana would def. be my #1 choice. But there are many others, such as Fromm, Nature's Variety, Go! Endurance, Wellness, etc. I know Petsmart has now starting selling Wellness which is a huge step up!

Taste of the Wild is another great food that is really cost efficient. I think around here it's about $10 for a 5-6lb bag and their ingredient list is really great for the price. It's manufactured at Diamond Food Plant and some are iffy about it because they used to use ethoxyuin (sp?) but they no longer do! I personally like TOTW and would feed it if I was not feeding Acana.

Thank you! I don't have a Petsmart around me. Closest one about one hour away. We do have a Petco; however, when I went there I did not see a lot of good choices. I did see Wellness but they were out of the one I needed. My groomer told me about TOTW. She said I would have to get it from a feed store around my area. I have not seen Acana. I will check it out and see where the closest one is. She also said Innova was one with good ratings.

I think the more I try to figure this out, the more confused I am on what to give her. It seems like I think something is good and then I find something bad in it. It is a little overwhelming! :(

I did make her some homemade treats today. At least I know what was it them! I will look up Acana. Thank you so much for the advice.

Thank you for posting that! I did read it and had no idea that it was causing problems!! :eek: This food thing is making me crazy!!!

I've fed EVO with rotation for awhile and love it...grain free, high protein, and my baby likes it the best. BUT with the recent sell to P&G I bought three large bags to freeze bc I'm not buying anymore. :(
I'll most likely replace with Orijen when I run out.

I would suggest getting some samples of foods you would feed. Your baby will help you choose which one is best. :)

My problem is the area I live it don't offer some of the ones that I hear is best. We don't have Orijen or Acana. I am trying hard to find some of the better brands around here. I was thinking about Innova then heard about the sell out. I also contacted some of the companies and most do not send samples. Wellness is sending some and I am patiently waiting on them. Thanks

I am almost done with my bag of Evo (it was free), and I won't buy it again. I'm not comfortable with the recent sale to P&G, and it is really high in calories. Chase acted like he was starving on this food, like it just wasn't filling him up at all. We are switching to Instinct right now (the pet store by me has buy 1 get one free all month on the 5lb bags). The only foods I feel good about feeding, and I can get locally are Orijen, Acana, Instinct, and Prairie. Have you checked any pet stores to see if they caould order in food for you? I can get each one of these at the health food store, have you checked any near you? Also, the pet store I like to shop at carries these too, although they don't stock the Acana they will order it for me and keep a couple bags in the back.

I didn't think about asking that. I will see if they can order it. I went to Acana website and used the locate store. None came up in Arkansas. I did send them an email and asked if they could tell me where I could purchase it. My groomer knows someone who carries Prairie but I have not checked it out yet. The one that seems to have the best ratings that I can find is Wellness. The Wellness small breed had a 5 star rating while the Wellness Core had a 6 star one. I don't know I think I will go to Petco and ask about the ordering.

I agree with what Britster said. After a loooooong search for THE right food for my gang, I think I've found it. I've been feeding Acana for a while now and the whole crew loves it and is doing well on it. I order mine online from www.pawschoice.com. Once I set up a recurring order for automatic shipments, they gave me free shipping! :thumbup:

It is really crazy that his weight shot up as fast as it did. 1.5 lbs is way too much for such a small dog.

Roxie has also gained over a pound since being on EVO. She has such a delicate stomach, and this is the first food we tried that didn't make her barf after every meal. However, with all that I have been reading about the P&G takeover and with the weight gain, I have been thinking about switching.

The vet said her weight gain may be due to her being spayed in February and not to mess with her food if she is having success with it.

I'd love a grain-free food that is high quality and lower in fat and protein. I'd also love something I can buy at the local pet store (I have to drive 20 minutes out of the way to get the EVO).

Let me tell you my experience with Evo: I was feeding ruby a mix of dry and canned Evo and she seemed to be doing fine, then about a week after she started eating it she developed mucousy (sp) poop with traces of blood. I took her to the vet that same morning and they ran a fecal on her. turned out she had an overgrowth of bacteria. the vet said it could be her food, it could be something she picked up outside, basically, we had no idea. the vet advised me to put her on boiled chicken and rice and prescribed some antibiotics. Okay. fine.

Well, we have another dog (shepherd/rott mix) who always ate Ruby's left over Evo out of her bowl. (he's on another dog food) So this dog never has accidents in the house, I mean never. then one afternoon he did and it was full of mucous as well and it smelled terrible. So the only thing him and Ruby had in common was Evo, I took him in and got him on antibiotics as well and threw the Evo out.

I guess I can't say for sure that's what it was, but it made sense at the time.

so now ruby is eating Now! with a little bit of Natural balance mixed in, it's the roll-type of NB. and she has been doing great.

I just wanted to add about your GSD... if he's used to eating another food, and suddenly ate EVO, then of course he had an upset stomach. Some dogs don't tolerate cold turkey switches like that, and I've heard from a few GSD owners that they have sensitive stomaches, not sure how true it is, but theirs all do. How fast did you transition Ruby over to the Evo from her old food, did you do a slow transition?

Want to add- I think Now! or Go! are better foods! :):) So good choice!

I transitioned Ruby over to the Evo in about 10 days. I was home cooking for her and the vet advised me against that, saying she wasn't getting a balanced diet. Then she got sick and went back on the chicken and rice, so I left her on straight chicken and rice until her poop returned to normal, then started to switch her over to Now! and NB. All in all it seemed like a month before she was eating only dog food. I still ocassionally slip in some chicken as a special treat.:p

As for the GSD, I always thought he had an iron stomach :rolleyes: I was wrong. I was also wrong to let him eat Ruby's leftovers. I just thought he's so much bigger and it's just a little bit. You know, you learn as you go. It just sets you back a few vet bills, right?

Wow, that's great about the free shipping. That will make it so much easier for people who don't live close to stores with these foods!

Yes because if you live it Arkansas you can't find half of the good brands. You have to order online or settle.

I've been feeding Coffee EVO for the last year. She has a real sensitive stomach, and EVO was one of the only foods she would eat, and wouldn't make her sick. We're using the Small Bites Red Meat.

No problems with weight gain or activity levels. And we just leave the food out during the day and refill if we notice its empty.

Our new boy that we got last month switched over to it real easy and has been doing good on it.

Ok, thank you all for your responses! I decided against EVO. Instead I went with Wellness. I hope I am making a right decision. They have a good rating and were willing to send me samples. Rosie did eat it and seems to be handling it ok. I am mixing it right now with her old food. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. It has to be better than the Bil Jac she was eating before.

Thanks! I needed to hear that. :) The changing of food has been quite a decision for me. I think it took me longer to decide on her food than it does for me to decide on my families. Can you imagine!!

Isn't that the truth. I eat fast food alot but put so much effort into the furbutt's diet. lol
Just remember that there is no ONE best food; there are a number of high quality foods available and whichever is the one that you're happy with and your baby does well on is the best..that is different for everybody. :)
