I called the vet's and the vet said that since my fur-kids are taking their Heart-worm meds. they're not at risk . I'll just have to keep an eye on them and if the whizzing and coughing continues, call again for an appointment. The nurse said that in all her years working at vet offices and rescue shelters she has never since a case of lung-worm. |

Im not sure, anyone else heard of this? The tablet Poppy was prescribed is called Drontal Plus. |
Okay... this may be a really stupid question BUT a friend of mine on FB just told a story about how her toddler just stuck a whole worm in his mouth before she could catch him. Made me think of this thread that I read earlier today. Is it at all possible for this lungworm thing to affect humans too? I have never heard or read anything about lungworm before but it makes me glad that Tatum doesn't typically eat things outside. Now the other big dogs might eat junebugs and stuff but I've never seen a slug around here. At least not in a very long time that I can recall. |
OMG, I have tons of slugs around here and I think I am the only person in most of my neighborhood who trys to get rid of them, but I do see their trails on the concrete sometimes. If I ever have a coughing dog, I'll remember this. Hope Poppy is okay. Good thing you called your vet so quickly. |
Thank you so much for posting this information. I had no idea! I read when your Poppy ate the slug and thought -- no worries. Good that you decided to check on it. I am adding this to all of the many hazards my backyard can hold for my pups. Yet another reason they should never be let outside alone. Just too many things that can hurt them! Think if a person doesn't see their dog eat a slug and then a while later they come down with symptoms. They might not find out for some time that lung worms are the culprit. Finding out late, could mean a fatal outcome! We have cow killer ants, several poisonous snakes, fire ants, bees, wasps, hawks, and now slugs to worry about. Glad mine are mostly house dogs. |
