Odd Eating Habit? I'm not sure what to make of this: My new yorkie, Princess, won't eat at her bowl. She'll grab one kibble, bring it away from the bowl, then sit and chew on that kibble. She'll repeat this until she's full..one kibble at a time, lol. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this in their dog? Or is this just her own way of eating? I'm not too worried because she's eating well. My only concern is when we stop free feeding her and she won't eat all her food during feeding time. Do you think she'll grow out of this? Or is this Princess's unique personality shining through? |
Perfectly normal behavior!:p They usually outgrow this habit. |
Yep, that's normal yorkie behavior. I think it's so cute! :) |
It's just a dog thing. It has to do with sharing their food and allowing others to get a bite. However I'm not sure if it is learned (when sharing food with litter mates after weening) or if it is instinctual (members of the wolf pack had to take turns getting something to eat after killing their prey). |
That makes me feel better! Thanks for all the quick responses. |
i have a 10 year old yorkie that still does it along with Porscha & Mee Ling i think it's just a dog thing |
All three of mine do this. Sometimes with my Biewers the one will sit and wait while the other one walks over to the bowl, gets a mouth-full, brings it back and drops it. Then they both eat. :-) |

How cute! |
Thanks everyone. This habit is new to me because my two year old maltese never did this and I've never seen other dogs that I've been around do this but it's comforting to know that it's pretty common. |
I don't use bowls - I use tiny little plates. Anyway, when Kacee was a puppy, she'd quite often just lay by her little plate and eat. Is that a lazy yorkie?:D She still does that sometimes. |
Rio and Bullet both do it too. Bullet takes it one step further and turns it into cardio-eating. He'll run at top speed into the kitchen, grab one kibble and run into the living room and jump up on the couch to eat it. And repeat until he's done! |
Ditto for Darwin and Mabel - so cute compared to our pyrenees cross who didn't chew his food until he was about two. |
It's a Yorkie thang. :D |
yup.. its normal.. My Chipper does that. And my dads girlfriend has a yorkie Bella and she does the same thing lol .. |
Oh my! This is so funny...we thought Maximus had started this because when we first brought him home WE were hand feeding him 1 kibble at a time to make sure he ate a certain amount each day!!! We call it Rotten To The Core!!! LOL |
