Not drinking water Sam is not drinking water. I used tap water, filtered water and cold boiled water. I was out his dish with soap and water everyday in case bacteria is making his water taste funny. It is like he is not drinking at all and if he does I can't even measure it. For food he gets a raw diet of mostly chicken wings or chicken breast or livers for now. We are just starting on raw so just chicken for now. When he was eating Natural balance kibble he was drinking a little more but he is drinking close to nothing now. Should I be worried? What can I do to make him drink more?:confused: |
It seems as if the raw probably has more water content than dry kibble, so maybe that is making him less thirsty. I don't know much about raw (I feed kibble), so that may be off. I do occasionally worry if Levi is playing hard and doesn't seem to be drinking enough. If I offer his water bowl to him and he doesn't seem interested, I can sometimes entice him to drink by first letting him lick water droplets off my finger. That does occasionally get him to drink more. I also crush ice cubes into smaller pieces - he loves them, and that increases his water intake. I'll also occasionally give him a bit of wet food, as it has a higher water content. |
Wet food (including raw) is 70+% moisture, so most dogs need to drink very little on these types of diets. If getting dry food only, they should be drinking about an ounce per pound of body weight daily (very generally speaking). You can always get bloodwork and a urinalysis done just in case, but IMO it is very normal. |
no worries; raw diet has a lot of moisture; so no need to drink as much water if any. with kibbles since it's dry and processed they tend to drink lots of water to hydrate. my dog only drinks water after a walk; however since her food is moist enough she doesn't drink any water. as long as her nose is moist then it's ok. |
We are home cookers and my dogs very rarely drink water. They usually do it after dry cookies or when one is getting a drink, they all want one. So I would watch but if everything else seems ok then probably he is getting enough. I would also check his gums and make sure they are pink. |
you can tell if they are dehydrated by checking the gum; it should be slimmy and moist :) not dry, sticky or tacky |
