How long after Vaccines?? Mabel had her third set of shots almost two weeks ago. I asked this on the health forum but would love to hear more opinions. How long does it take for the vaccine to be effective. I can't wait to take her for longer walks but I want to make sure she is completely and fully vaccinated. Thanks for any advice!:) |
I'm assuming since Mabel had three sets of vaccines she is about 16-18 weeks old. And assuming the pup was not vaccinated when she was ill, stressed or weak and the vaccine was handled properly in storage. Maternal antibody interference is the most common cause of vaccine failure. She should be clear to go out since it has been two weeks....... Vaccines do not stimulate immunity immediately after they are administered. Once a vaccine is administered, the antigens must be recognized, responded to, and remembered by the immune system. In most puppies, disease protection does not begin until five days post vaccination. Full protection from a vaccine usually takes up to fourteen days....... Peak rabies antibody titers are reached 28 days after the initial rabies vaccination, and the animal is considered immunized at that time. |
Thank you so much for your advice! I was thinking 2 weeks after the final vaccines should be safe but I've heard many different theories. Yours is a very thorough answer and just what I wanted to hear - I feel there is a big walk coming Thursday - yippee!! By the way, Mabel is 19 weeks old and raring to go!! Thanks again!:) |

In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs |
