Stinky breath! Help! Chewie has really bad stinky breath. I brush his teeth almost everyday and mouth spray him. He has two baby teeth that are still there I dont know if that could be a cause to his bad breath. Chewie is 1 year old. Any advice would be highly appreciated. |
It may be from the baby teeth...I recommend a visit to the vet...All his teeth should have fallen out by now...may need to have them removed.. |
Bullet had really bad breath before his retained baby teeth were pulled, but the second cause was hair caught in his teeth. Turns out when he was play fighting with Rio (she has a full coat) he was getting her hair caught in his teeth! Definitely have your vet check his teeth! |
It could well be because of the baby teeth, I would take him to a vet. |
I would say its definitely the baby teeth. I had the same problem, but once we had them removed, it got much better. Not perfect, but better. |

It's probably the baby teeth - but what toothpaste/mouthwash do you use? My Mia has had all her baby teeth out for 3yrs, has had her dental, brush her teeth with vet supported toothpast/mouthwash and still has bad breath. I think it's because she has a little bit of a anus problem. Her's has always been a little swollen but she goes poo just fine. She spends a lot of time cleaning herself where my boys don't.... they just kind of drop and run! lol! Try watching his potty/cleaning habits. Just a thought :) |
It is probably the baby teeth. It could also be the brand of food you are using. For toothpaste, we like C.E.T. Vanilla Mint toothpaste over all the brands we've tried. |

My TinkerBelle has 2 baby teeth left, too, and her breath is atrocious! When I have her spayed I'll have them pulled and get a dental. Hopefully it will improve her breath. |
Yep, sounds like time for a dental! I just had dentals done on my 2 grown dogs. One was quick and easy, very little tartar. The other one had to have a lot of teeth pulled. He had the stinky breath and that was why I took him in. I figured he had some bad teeth. Sure enough. This is very unhealthy for them and can cause infection and even heart problems. The dentals are not that expensive, I had just put it off because the anestesia scares me. But if you have a good vet experienced with little ones, it is safe. I just had this done a couple days ago, and already even through the healing process, fresh breath again! Yay! BTW both of mine are near the same age, have always eaten the same, had the same dental products used on them and are otherwise in good health. The only real difference is breed. Yorkies are just more prone to teeth problems even when you take good care as you are doing. |
Thanks. Yeah, I had a feeling that it was the baby teeth. I did not know that by not getting them pulled out would cause infection and heart problems. Will go to the vet asap. |

It's not so much the baby teeth per se as the fact that retained baby teeth make it harder to keep the teeth cleaned and therefore plaque builds up. The bacteria that lives in the plaque on the teeth can cause plaque in the arteries, too. |
