Eukanuba- Is it bad? When we first got Star we did so much research to find the best dog food we could find. We looked at all different kinds and at the time had found that Eukanuba had the best for their growth all around. Now I am reading up on it again after being in Petsmart and seeing an all natural dog food and finding bad reviews about it. I can not tell if the reviews are just one company trying to up sell their product by down grading another or if it is truly bad. Star is 2 now and has been on Eukanuba from the day we brought her home. She had always been super healthy and looks great. Any ideas? |
Check this link out. Go to the dry food area and search for the brand you are looking for and you may be in for some interesting stuff. I have been reading and going through this website for like the past 4 days. Lots of useful info and many brands have been reviewed. |
ooops, here it is Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble |
Well I guess it could be worse. If she is doing well with no problems I think I would stay with it. |

:thumbup: find a food that your dog does well on it and stick with it!! You keep changing foods, its only gonna make your dog picky. If she is doing well on it, then why bother.. every DOG FOOD out there has a bad review if you look hard enough. :) |
My girls have been on Eukanuba since the day I got them, thats what my breeder use's. Bailey & Bella love it, there coats are beautiful and shinny I have never had any weight problems with them. I also give them chicken or beef liver for a snack so I'm sure that as a lot to do with the nice coats as well. I know its not the best but its the best for them, changing foods is not good and as long as they eat it is all that matters to me. |
I was feeding Sophie Eukanuba for Yorkshire Terriers. She did fine on it. After considerable research I switched to Wellness with all natural ingredients and free of meat by-products. She took to it right away, looks and feels great and has had excellent healthy check ups. |
The way I see it, it's just like with people... you have those who live off TV dinners and McDonald's, and you have those who shop all organic, and eat healthy every single day. People who eat terribly, smoke heavily, etc. can live perfectly normal lives. Just like the person who exercises, eats excellent and "does everything right" can drop dead at age 30 from a heart attack. Or a person who never smoked a day in their life can die from lung cancer. That's life. Just because a dog does "well" on Eukanuba or Pedigree doesn't necessarily mean they're eating as good as they could.... but it also doesn't mean they're going to be unhealthy dogs and die young either necessarily. I personally would never feed it because I don't agree with the ingredients, and I don't like the amount of recalls it has, etc, but those are my personal feelings that I've researched heavily. I feed only Champion Pet Foods (Orijen/Acana) when it comes to kibble, but there's a few other brands I'd def. consider feeding and have in the past. That's not to say Jackson doesn't get to enjoy a little Cesar wet food every now and then, or a Milk Bone, I just do it in moderation... just like people. You gotta do for your dogs what you personally decide is right... but in the end you can't place blame and say 'this dog didn't live as long as this one because it ate better food.' There's too many other factors out there. Do your research, and feed what you feel works best for your dog. Not what someone else says its best for your dog. |
Britster makes a valid point. In the end it's your personal decison and comfort level that matters. You can read a lot more about this subject here in the Health & Diet section if your interested.:) |
Thanks for the input. Maybe I should have asked this question diffrently. What type of ingredients should I look for in a quality dog food and what ingredients should I stay away from? Britster you make a good point. My goal is to try and give my puppies the healthiest life I can possibly provide with in my own control. I would feel awful feeding my dogs "bad" dog food. |

The Dog Food Project - Identifying better products The Dog Food Project - Ingredients to avoid There will also be many conflicts about single ingredients (like the current controversy regarding Canola oil) where people are on both sides of the fence. You will just have to make a personal decision on those. |

These are the companies that own Eukanuba, Iams, Hills, Nutro, Pedigree, Milk-Bone, Ceasar and pretty much all the brands you see in Wall-Mart, Target, the supermarket etc. These are the foods that contain by-products, fillers, and some of the nastier ingredients. The other 15% of the market is made up of the companies we talk a lot about here - Champion, Fromm, Merrick, Solid Gold, Wellness to name a few. My opinion is that there is a vast difference in the ingredients that big 85% use vs the smaller companies. Read the labels and once you read the ones for the quality companies, you'll be able to spot the bad ones very easily. |

Thank you so much for all of your input! Its been a real help. I think we are going to have to do some research and a better food. |
