My Skinny baby My Harley is 9 months old and weights 5.7lb. If one more person tells me that he is too skinny I'm going to loose it. I don't know what to do, he eats his food, I give him treats, nutri-cal etc. I'm hoping because I just got him fixed maybe he will plump up a bit more. The vet's assistant said I should have his stool checked. Now I'm all worried and feel like people are looking at me like I starve me baby. Is this something I should be worried about?? Or maybe that's just the way he is.. Any help would be appreciated... |
5.7 pounds is a good weight , why would you like him to be bigger ? At his age , it is the weight that he is supposed to have . Bigger will probably start to be obese . |
My Skinny baby I don't want him bigger I think he is fine. Everyone keeps telling me that he needs to gain more weight. |
If you know you are feeding him right I wouldn't worry. My cowboy is a darn STICK. he eats well it's just he's skinny. Personally I used to worry but now I base it on his waist to rib cage size. YES his waist is thin but his rib cage is small too... he is LONGGGGGGGG though. I always call him my little potato chip because he reminds me of the shape of a Pringles can |
tell them to mind their own business and worry about their own weight.. rather a thin baby than a fat one |
If you are ok with his weight . Don't listen to those peoples . |
Samson is 8 months old and weighs 4.8 lbs. He looks a little thin (he's long too) but the vet said he is still a puppy and probably burns off all of the food he eats. (he eats a good amount everyday) The vet said he is fine. I'm guessing maybe be will fill out a little as he gets older. I think as long as your baby is eating and playing like a normal pup he's fine. :) |
for 9 months ur puppy is the right weight. teddy is 7 months old and weighs 3.2 pounds...the vet says he is a normal weight so ur puppy should be fine! :animal36 |

Alfie was really skinny at that age as well but now is filling out it , it took a while though but everyone kept saying how skinny he was dont let it bother you if you know he s eating well. They can take a liitle while to fill out. |
I know how you feel. Just today someone told me my Tigger was too skinny. He's five months old and weighs 3.6 pounds. I'm sorry but I don't feed mine table scrappings and that's why a lot of dogs are little sausage rolls. I don't think your dog is too skinny at all. He's a puppy and they burn it off very easily. If you're feeding him well, and doing everything right, then just ignore them. |
Why would anybody have the nerve to say something like that? Jig, my 20 month old male is 3.4 lbs right now. He's a little guy. I've been worried about him myself but nobody says anything. When I hold him and feel him, I can tell he's getting his nutrition by how well I can feel his bone structure. Does he have any padding or is it all bones? That kind of thing. As long as your little one is eating and you're giving supplements. I wouldn't worry. Also, 5.7 lbs sounds normal. Keep in mind that a standard Yorkie is considered to be within 3-7 lbs. Although as we all know they seem to come in a lot of shapes and sizes. I think that "standard" is for show dogs. Do what you and your vet feel is best for YOUR dog and not what other people think. Everyone thinks mine is a puppy because he's so small and just can't get over that I walk him with a harness and leash versus carrying him around. Dawn |
Are his ribs and spine sticking out? If he doesn't feel boney then he is fine. |

I used to get people telling me he was too thin and I needed to feed him more (which greatly annoyed me). I even asked the vet several years ago and I was told he was healthy 90% of dogs are obese and he isn't so that eased my mind so when told me he's too thin again they got the quote direct from the vet. |
Just today a vet told me my Abbie is too skinny. She is little. She weighed in at 2.75 pounds and she was 3.4 a few months back. Different scales though so I can't be sure how much difference there is. The thing is, she's very long and she IS rather bony. I can feel every rib, her back, etc. BUT....she seems healthy and happy and playful, her coat looks good. But when she's done, she really crashes! That's it mom, I'm done! Should I worry? Please tell me it's all normal! |

Maggie won't be 9 months old until the end of this month. She weighs 4.14. I think she is a little butter ball. She is little, but plump. I would say she could sleep in a shoe box if my lap wasn't always around. I would say your baby is just fine. |
my sampson is 11 months old and weighs 4.5 lbs. i was worried he was so tiny i asked the vet if he was ok. the vet said as long as there ribs dont stick out by the stomach area then hes ok. you just shouldnt be able to see there ribs. im sure your pup is fine |
My Chico is just like your furbaby he is same age and weight and he is long to me! About 14 or inches and when I look at him I at times think he's thin but my vet said he is pretty much grown in size and in no time will fill out. Don't be worried! |
people have some nerve  yorkies are not suppose to be fat. they are small dogs. do they want them to be 20 lbs. dont listen to them. your baby has the right weight ;) |
If you feed your yorkie enough and is healthy, i wouldnt care what others think. I bet your baby is just fine. |

2- what do you feed her if she is over 6 mos. she can be tested for liver shunt and it would be good to rule that out. |
Hi, Sorry I'm just getting back to you. I didn't get an email letting me know someone responded. Anyway, Abbie is a year old this month. I've been feeding her Nutro Ultra Puppy since I got her when she was 5 months old. I took her to a vet the other day (we're vacationing in AZ so it wasn't HER vet) for an unrelated problem and she thought she was too thin. I told her she was a very light eater except when it came to her cousins wet food and that she gobbles right up. So this vet told me that even though she doesn't like wet food, that it was more important to get weight on her than worry about her teeth right now and to go ahead and feed her that. So I bought some Iams because that the one she's tried and enjoyed. It's been a few days now and now she's kinda turning up her nose at that as well. She'll eat it off our fingers but not so much on her own. I'm actually beginning to worry a bit about liver shunt myself. I don't know much about it but she does stagger sometimes but only outside and I think it's just the grass and she's so little. Sorry for the long post. I wish I had a way to post photos but can't until I get back home. There is a photo of her in the gallery if anyone cares to look. Any comments will be appreciated. |
She is a beauty . Don't think she is too skinny , she is ok . |
he is probably just a tiny yorkie....I mean Dollar is 4 months and weight about 2lbs....so that sounds about right to me. |
I think Abbie is just lovely . Alfie was like this and then filled out a little once he was about a year old, so dont worry , she just looks petite and very feminine. |
Well, thank you to you both. I adore her and of course worry because she's so little. She's the first yorkie I ever even held so I just didn't realize she was smaller than most for her age. Then, this morning I read that sad post about little Muffin and how the breeder didn't want to sell her as she was only 3 pounds and was afraid to place her and I thought, Oh my! I'm careful with her but like some others, she's a jumper and is on and off the sofa 50 times a day. I do hope she gains some weight in the next few months. |
