Origen puppy formula
 
We started feeding Kona Origen. He's 1.5 years old and 4 lbs. We got the puppy formula because it felt like it was a smaller kibble size than the adult formula so we thought hed have a easier time eating it. Is it ok feed him puppy food even though he's not a puppy anymore? I think I heard it's not good for their liver cause higher fat content? Is this true for Origen?

Also does anyone feed origen's adult food? Is the kibble size much bigger than the puppy food?

I'm not an expert, but I think at 1.5 years old... he should be on the adult formula.

Was he having difficulty eating the adult kibble?

Purina Pro Plan has just come out with their new XS Toy Breed Adult and Puppy.
It is great!! The smallest kibble I have been able to find. You might see what
everyone thinks about it and try that.

Only problem it only comes in small bags-- more expensive!!

I wouldn't choose to ever feed Purina over Orijen, just my opinion. But there are a few kibbles that I find to be really small - Nature's Variety Instinct and Fromm come to mind! You may wanna check those two out. Wellness has a small bites formula as well.

The Orijen Red (which is for all stages - puppies and adults) is the size of a dime? And its thin like that. My 2.7 lb little guy had no problem chomping it down.

I feed Acana (made by the same company as Orijen). The kibble is a little smaller than a dime and my 3 and 4 pounders have no problems eating it.

I'm not at home and did not actually measure - but I fed Acana and Orijen and I believe the kibble is exactly the same - so probably smaller than a dime.

I feed Orijen Adult to Levi and he's never had trouble chewing up the pieces. I was originally a little concerned about it, but it has been fine. At least he's chewing them...with smaller kibble he'd occasionally just swallow whole pieces!

My baby is 11 months and still on Orijen puppy. I plan on switching to adult at 12 months. Does that sound about right?

Thanks for your replies. Our little guy is so picky and Origen is one of the only kibble he'll eat. So I guess the consensus is that we should take him off of puppy food and onto the all stages?

Is puppy food bad for an adult (1.5 yo) dog? What is the difference?

Sandy was on Orijen Puppy until he's 12 months old. He's only eating Acana Grasslands now. He's 3.7lbs and has no problems chewing the kibbles.

There are a few reasons... Puppy food is ment for when puppies are growing into adults.. Their bones grow at a very fast rate, braina are developing and burning up cals and fat at a fast rate therefor needing the extra calories, fat and protien. So when a dog reaches adults the adult stage his body will not burn off the excess cals and fat and the dog could become VERY over weight.

Now our Chocolate lab Kylie we kept on puppy food till about 2 years old BUT she was so high energy she cold burn all that off. But it was not Orijin...

Orijin is already high enough in their Adult food which is more then some puppy food out there. We feed adult Orijin and Izzy has no trouble with it and she will be 1 year on the 25th... :)

So is potential weight gain the only issue or is there any stress on his heart or other organs with the higher fat content? I ask because I think kona's finally a decent weight. He was so skinny but now that we've been feeding him origin puppy in the morning and Stella and chewys at night, he's filled out to I think a good size.

My only concern with the puppy formula is if it will stress his heart or organs somehow because I'm giving puppy food to our adult dog. Is that true? I could just switch to adult formula but he's sooooo picky that he even sometimes spits out the larger sized puppy kibbles. So I am hesitant about getting the adult one if the kibble size is much bigger if it's not totally necessary.

If he is at a good weight now... then I would switch him over to adult food to maintain that weight and still keep feeding him the chewy's too... :)

Yes the kibble is alittle bigger... But since he already likes the taste of Orijin then he should be fine. And if not then put some in a zipplock bag and "crush" them 2 time with a rolling pin. This will break them up alittle...

Check the ingredient list. Sometimes the puppy formulas are a little higher in protein. But I have noticed the higher quality foods do not have that much variation between the puppy and adult formulas. Sure, the adult is probably designed to meet the average adult dog's needs best, but if yours is maintaining a better weight on the puppy formula and the protein % is within limits, I'd run it by the vet just to be safe but doubt that it will really be a problem for him.

I usually feed an All Life Stage food -- so it is the same from weaning to old age. My breeder friend just gave me some samples of Solid Gold Wee Bits (it is all life stage). I am thinking of switching. It is very tiny kibble!

my dogs love solid gold and the kibble is the smallest i've seen so far. i think they are great for tiny pups.

Jezebel started eating Natures Variety when she was 2.5 lbs and she is now a very lean 11 lbs 14 oz. She had absolutely no problem with the kibble size when she was small, it is not as small as some I've seen, but it is by no means big, either.

I've let her test some larger size kibble. In my experience, if they love the kibble, they'll work on it and find a way to eat it!
