Acana feeding amounts? Ok, so we are now feeding Acana Grasslands and all three love it! We also mix in 1tsp of Tripett for the small ones and 2tsp for Crosley who is 17-18lbs. We called the company because we were confused on the amount to feed. Usually we have always fed 1/8 2x times a day (1/4) total & 1/4 2x for Crosley. They said we should be doing 1/4 2x for the small ones & 1/2 2x times. This is double what they are used to, but they do seem hungry. I really thought they would require less since it's grain free:confused: |

I found that Jackson, 15lbs, did not need nor want 1 cup of food per day. He gets 1/4 cup in the AM and 1/4 cup in the PM, as well as about 2tsp of wet mixed in. Or, I will give him a raw patty in the morning in replacement of breakfast. Occasionally, I will up his food to 3/4 cup per day if he's super active, but he's pretty active in general and does well on 1/2 cup of Acana kibble per day. :) I used to just free-feed and Jackson never ate a full cup a day of food. When I first started scheduled feedings, I went along with the bag like you did, and gave 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening. I thought I'd be starving him if I gave any less! He would often times leave kibble behind, or not really WANT to eat it but since there was wet food in it, he would almost force himself to eat it cuz it was so good, lol. I would just monitor them and see what they do best on. |

I remembered reading what you feed Jackson and I know you've mentioned he's pretty active. Sounds like he's a lot more active than our three, so you would think he would need more food! Our three all seem hungry though. I think I will try increasing a little, but not to what they said and see how it goes! Their eyes have improved drastically over the Fromm and they are gobbling it up! |

Good to know! I would give Crosley maybe 3/4 cup a day and see how that goes. Also, besides his feeding every day, he also gets quite a few treats throughout the day. Either Zuke's or chicken jerky. |

Maximo eats Acana. He weighs 8 lbs, 4 oz and is active. The extra 4 oz came after he started eating Acana. :D Anyway, he eats less than 3/4 cup a day. I use a 1/4 cup scoop and I don't fill it to the top for his 3 meals per day. I also give him a few sweet peas and 2 teaspoons of yogurt per day. Chew bones are his only treats. |
What kind of wet food do you mix in with the Acana? |

I only mix wet food in because Jackson will go days without eating with just dry food and I really don't mind making his food yummy and enjoyable for him. I always had a problem though with buying the 13oz cans and then not feeding them after 5 days in the fridge so I end up throwing away a little less than half a can! I've always heard the limit is 3-5 days to keep them in fridge... so I recently found out you can portion out half of it and put it in the freezer to keep it fresh longer! |
my puppy is overweight,,he's 4 month old and 4.125 lb...I reduced the amount of food to 1/4 cup per day and will see what happen. Btw he's eating Acana grain-free wild prairie. |

Parent weight doesn't really predict what the offspring will weigh, you'd have to look into histories of the lines to really get a good estimate, and even then it's not surefire. Again, check with your vet, they can tell you for sure if it's a healthy weight or not. |

Parents alone won't tell the weight story either. Grandparents, parents, and average of all litters can give a good idea. But even then, there are always those puppies that wind up being the exception. If yours is, you would not want to limit his food for no good reason. On a good quality food, active puppies are rarely going to need to be put on a diet. It would be more likely to have a metabolic condition than to be overeating to the extent of obesity at this age. My guess would be he is just going to be a larger than average dog. Then again, some grow in spurts and then stop early. So, you can never tell with these unique little guys. |
