Teeth? Thank you all for the advice on my post...my other question is my six year old has bad teeth and bad breath  can any one advise on how to clean without putting her to sleep? Do groomers do this??? |
Besides brushing and dental sprays I don't think much else can be done. I'm not 100% though. Do you think your dog would sit super still if someone was scraping his teeth? Maybe someone would do it if he would or just put him on a light tranquilizer? I'm assuming it's similar to a human dental cleaning appointment. |
You may want to do a search for teeth care or oral hygiene...you'll find a lot of useful info there. |
There are vets who offer anesthesia-free dental cleaning. I've attached one link for you to take a look at. I don't know anything about this process myself, so I would do a lot of research before trying it. When I googled the topic just now a lot of hits popped up so you might trying doing that first. Honestly, I do not brush my dogs teeth - but I do give one greenie every night (I know - there is a lot of controversy on that - but it works for me) and they visit the groomers every 6 weeks or so. I have the groomer brush their teeth. My yorkie is 5 years old and her teeth still do not require a teeth cleaning (I'm sure some day she'll need it). And for a fresher breath - I spray this spray (don't have it in front of me to tell you what it is) in her mouth every once in a while. (There's also this blue stuff that you can put in his water - but I didn't like it). But, if yours needs his teeth cleaned, at this point, I really don't think that brushing them will help. You may have to make that appointment with your vet for a cleaning. Good luck! |
I agree. Sounds like it's time for a cleaning. My groomer said she cleans teeth w/o putting them to sleep. But I'm not comfortable w/that. I try to take advantage when my little girl is put to sleep by having other things done. For example, removing any moles/warts, expressing glands, etc. When I had my beagles cleaned, I had the vet check his throat for any obstructions as he seems to pant really hard. The cleaning cleared up his bad breath. In between cleanings, I use Dr. Foster/Smith Clens Pads everyday. Helps with the doggie breath. I tryed the water additive but it gave my little girl diarrhea big time. Good luck & let us know how it goes. |
I just got off the phone with my vet now he is really old school.... He doesn't charge an arm and a leg for everything and his his dental cleaning is only $50.00 and he will put her under to do it he said he doesn't need to draw blood for unecessary things unless there was something I wanted to have checked that is where vets make their money. My mouth dropped to the floor. I am so excited. I have been using this vet for close to 2 years. Just wanted to share |
Blood work assures the vet that there's no medical issures going on before the anesthetic is administered. I'd question this vet. Just had my beagles teeth cleaned & blood work was only $30. Don't think the vet made much money from that. You might want to reconsider the blood work for the safety of your pet. |

What would the bloodwork be for? What type of tests do they look for? |
