Vaccine Concerns I know there are alot of threads on here about Vaccination. My yorkie mix had a really bad reaction and I am concerned about her getting her vaccines. She just turned 6 months today, the vet said I can do without the vaccines, but pretty much I can't let her go anywhere. What kind of life is that? Well on the research I have done seems like the L in DHLPP may be the culprit. Does anyone here vaccinate their dogs themselves? I am really considering going that route so I can decide what goes into her body. She has not been fixed yet and most vets seem like they will not touch her unless she has all her shots! Thoughts/Concerns?? Thanks, Bea :) |
"L" is for lepto which is not a core vaccine and known to cause serious reactions in Yorkies and other small dogs. We've got lots of information here that may answer your questions: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...n-vaccine.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ay-beware.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...concerned.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-overview.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...tz-2-10-a.html |
It would not be a good idea to give them yourself because if she reacts at home, it would be harder to get her help quickly. She should be premedicated with Benadryl before vaccines. If she was given th "L", then that is likely the problem. You and you alone have control over what goes into her even if a vet is doing it. It would be unethical and most likely illegal for a vet to give anything without your consent. You'll need to find a good vet that is willing to work with you if you want to continue to vaccinate (and if just the L was suspected, most vets would). |
Ziva had a terrible reaction to her last puppy shots, The vet shot her before I even had time to discuss them. She just got her first boosters and he was very agreeable to skip the lepto and delay the rabies til next month. No bad reaction from the DHPP, well maybe a little sleepy and peed on me in her sleep.. |
How many rounds of puppy vaccines has she had total? At six months old, most pups are done with puppy vaccinations. 3 rounds of puppy vaccines with one booster is considered fully vaccinated. I would definitely not allow the vet to give anything more than the DHPP (no Lepto) and give a preventative dose ofBenedryl before the vaccination is given. |
Because of my great concern over reactions to vaccinations w/my little ones (4 5 & 6 lbs), my vet, actually, gives a benedryl injection, before the vaccination...Yes, it makes them a little sleepy, but I think it is a good preventative from reactions....I, definitely, wouldn't give lepto, unless your dog might be drinking water that is a run off from livestock pee/poop, etc...The only dogs I ever gave lepto to, were dogs on a farm, who were apt to drink water that had been exposed to urine/feces from cattle, horses, wild animals, etc....Btw, humans can get lepto from soda cans that have dried up rat urine on them, so wash those soda cans, before you drink from them!!! |
I would look into a good holistic vet that might be able to give you options- and continue doing research on your own. |
She only had 1 round of vaccines when she was with us at 3 months old, breeder did give her vaccinations prior and I noticed now it was dhpp (no L!) when I brought her home from when we took her to the vet(they gave her a (7way dhlppv) she fell to the floor, heart pounding, hardly responsive (took us 5 hrs to snap her out of it!) I was scared and never took her back for her boosters. I was so worried if I took her back she would die. Took her to another vet and all he wanted to tell me was that Science says this, Science says that, I got so angry and said I am not dealing with science I am dealing with a LIVE being!!! Still am pretty scared to get her vaccines. The more articles I read the worse my nerves get! I just want the best for my little girl. I have 2 labs and never had issues like this before... |

There are many good vets out there who understand that toy breeds require very different care than other dogs. |
Max got the lyme vaccination. It is a two part vaccination. When he got the first round of the vacc,he got very lethargic,he was shaking, and he wasn't himself.I almost didn't get him the 2nd round of the shot.I told the vet,and she told me to give him a half of 25mg benadryl 2 hours before I bring him in for the 2nd round of the shots,it worked!!!He had absolutelty no reaction to the 2nd round of this vacc.Maybe you can ask your vet if you can give him some benadryl before you bring him in.It worked for Max. |
