What to do AFTER anal gland abscess lanced? I took my 4 year old yorkie to his vet after I noticed a swelled purple lump, which seemed to be his anal gland. Our vet said it was indeed an abscessed gland, and she had to lance it and remove the liquid and discharge. It's been about two hours now, and although it has calmed down, I think it's still bleeding a bit. I went and got him doggy diapers, and can see the blood being soaked up. I'm not sure if it's good to keep it "unbreathable," but he was trying to lick it. I have a cone to use for him, and I may if needed, but he's just resting right now. My question is, how long after did your little one bleed? Did you do anything in particular afterwards? I did come home and clean it with a warm compress (which the vet said I should be doing twice a day for awhile), and I will give him his antibiotics with dinner soon. Thanks so much for listening! |
Did they give you an antiseptic to clean it with? When Brody had a lancing, it wasn't still bleeding it was just like an open wound like a small eraser sized hole. So I was told to use warm compresses, use the antiseptic and then there was also a cream. I stopped the use of the antiseptic because it was burning him . . .they also gave him pain killers to take home, but they made him very loopy, so I stopped those as well. What worked best for me was just to wet a paper towel with warm water and then use the antibiotic cream, he wasn't given any oral antibiotics. We did this 3 times a day. They wanted the hole to close slowly . . . |
No, they did not give him any antiseptic or any creams. She just told me to do the warm compress, that I may see some bleeding tonight, and to give him the oral antibiotics. She did say that they put an ointment on after they were done lancing it. It's really crazy how quickly this happened. He was fine last night, I noticed that he was licking his butt excessively this morning, gave him a bath this afternoon, and noticed the swelling. Called the vet right away, and luckily they were able to get me in about 1.5 hrs after I called. I was doing research here on YT and random websites, and started to freak out because I read that some can just rupture. :( |
That was exactly how it happened to Brody. He woke up with it one morning, it wasn't there the night before, and since it was a Saturday, and we didn't have a regular vet appointment, it was considered an emergency surgery. I would just do as your vet advised you, but keep an eye on it because you don't want it to get re-infected because it is an open sore, just keep that area as clean as you can. |
Will do. Thank you!! How is Brody now? Has he had another episode where he needed to get expressed? I hope he recovered quickly from it too! :) |
Andromeda has had anal ruptures several times. Each time we used warm compresses 4 times a day for around 5 minutes. Also she was on an antibiotic. The more you use the compresses the faster he will heal, as it helps to leach out any baterial components of feces left, and also keeps it clean. Hang in there... |
