dessicant pellets EVERYWHERE - help! scared she will eat them! my family got a new chair - a recliner - from ikea recently. my yorkie, maggie, quickly decided that this was her new favorite place to hide under, so we had to block the area underneath it so she wouldn't get squashed when the recliner was pushed back and the mechanism underneath moved down. we blocked it off with some cardboard box tops. HOWEVER - every time i change the recliner position, i hear this little rattling sound. finally i pulled out the box tops and checked. the chair is RAINING those little silica gel desiccant pellets! i vaccuumed them all up (while saying "NO NO NO" to maggie who kept trying to check them out) but every time i move the chair MORE COME OUT! in addition to wondering what on earth is going on, i am also scared that she will eat these little pellets and if they will be harmful to her, and what i should do if she eats them??? |
I would suggest call your vet for advice as I know there have been cases of "fabric lickers" who've had the fabric ball up in them, needing surgery, as well as those that have gotten a hold of styrofoam. I would call to be on the safe side. Kendra |
Silica pellets are dangerous for our pups for two reasons. First they absorb moisture, which if eaten, may cause stomach rupture depending on how much was eaten and the size of the pup. Secondly some silica pellets have had a moisture indicator added; usually Cobalt ll chloride, which is highly toxic and a known carcinogenic. I would definitely go through that chair.....Extensively! Have someone help you and make sure you shake all of the pellets out of that chair,and vacuum them up, before you let her into the room. Do not let her get behind the chair if you think that there may be any pellets left. |
My Pixie got a hold of a silca pack a couple of years ago. She started throwing up a lot and I called the ER vet and they said they weren't poisonous but could cause bad tummy upset. I took Pixie in because she was throwing up so much. They gave her fluids and something to settle her tummy and she was fine the next day. I would try and get rid of the silca and not let her near the chair. |
First of all toss the recliner on its top and find out where the pellets are spilling out from and seal it up. Duct tape it if you have to, its better then loosing your animal over IF it eats these and something major happens. You won't stop this until you fix the initial problem in the first place. After you do that, clean that room thoroughly and make sure you've got them all cleaned up. |
