yorkie coughing, hacking, gagging
 
My little baby has always had breathing issues, like when he gets excited he starts gagging. It scares me because it seems like he is having trouble getting his breath. Does anyone else have a yorkie that does this? My sisters yorkie does this too and her vet told her that it was common with this bread...

We have a vet appt tomorrow at 4:15...I just wanted to check and see if anyone else's babies do this...

mine just turned one in feb and he still does that from time to time. when i first got him he had cough and they gave him medicine and it went away. ive noticed him hacking and he just recently seemed like he was going to vomit. one thing i know for sure is that you have to be so careful about them getting to anything my baby has a tendancy of eating everything he sees on the floor (and he looks in the corners and cracks) ive seen him going for a popcorn kernel before but i stopped him. but i think that maybe he's eating random things, he does it outside too w acorns etc. so that cud be causing irritation. he just went for a checkup and they said he was fine so idk thats just my theory

my yorkie is neally 6... shes always done it from a pup. its never affected her. she doesnt have trouble breathing its just like shes got rubbish on her chest, i pat and rub her back and she hack (sorry bit gross) but after that shes ok. normally its wen shes playing with her toys or wen she was on a lead. so we swopped the lead for a harness and shes loads better now xx

May be Kennel cough. Easy treated but annoying.

Zach, my yorkie is 5 months old and when we got him he had a kennel cough. We took him to the vet and she gave him anti biotics. The kennel cough went away but every once in awhile he hacks and gags. My Shorkie who is 10 months old hacks more often when she's excited but she checked out okay. My vet also told me it was common with this breed.

The coughing/choking/gagging is common for yorkies. They have a sensitive trachea and you must be careful when walking them on a lead. You should never use a collar with a lead; only a harness. Their trachea's can collapse very easy.

My Chorkie (chihuahua/yorkie mix) does this when she runs around, plays and gets too excited. I wouldnt worry too much but its worth getting checked out just in case. :aimeeyork
