Rabies Shot I was told today that when dogs get a rabies shot, their brain swells. They said that if they are in their second phase of getting nervous or w/e and they get their rabies shot, that nervousness will stay with them forever. Dharma is still anxious when we leave. We haven't been leaving her. When we go to work she goes to our parents' house. She will be 6 months next week. She is getting spayed. We have her scheduled to get her rabies at the same time. I am now having second thoughts. Can anyone help me with this? Do you know about thing about this rabies shot and the truth behind the behavior sticking with them? Please let me know! |
Was this is a vet or somebody with a PhD or Masters in the sciences? Your pup does need a rabies vaccine by law if you are in the US. Some very bad things can happen if it is not given (legally). However, IMO it is best not to do it on spay day. Most dogs do just fine when this is done, but they are already going through so much. No reason to add extra stress when it isn't necessary. And with all the other drugs that will be given, if there is a reaction you won't know what caused it. |

I think we're going to wait a week for her to get her rabies. Do you think is enough time? |
I wouldn't have the rabies vaccine given when she is spayed. I would wait a month. I also had my vet give a shot of benadryl right before he gave my Bentley the rabies shot. At the time of Dharma's spay have the vet check for retained baby teeth so he can extract them while she is under anesthesia. Any other questions you may have feel free to ask, ok? Dyan |
You think it's better to get the rabies shot a month later? I will do that then. The doctor knows to do her teeth then also. |
I know my vet requires rabies shot before he will spay. Might want to check that out. |
I called the vet today and they told me I can reschedule her rabies when I dropped her off for her spay so that works!!! I'm so nervous but I know she needs to have it done! I just can't wait until she is home!! |
