Canidae and weight gain Skittles has been on Canidae(all life stages) for a month or so now and she seems to have put on some weight! Skittles is 2.5 yrs old by the way. I feed her a lil less than a 1/2c 3x a day...could that be the problem? Before Gunner we just left her bowl down on the floor with food in it all the time and I'll admit she was on some crappy food! :embarasse I am considering moving her dishes to a different part of the house. Naturally I cant leave her dish full of food down w/o Gunner gobbling it all up. Her and Gunner currently get their meals in the kitchen. Gunner is confinded to the kitchen and family room. Skittles has some time in the same rooms as him as well as the rest of the house. He on the other hand gets 1c 3x a day and you can still see his ribs a lil...should I switch foods on him too or just up what i give him! So I'm just curious if other have noticed their babes putting on some weight when on this food. I am considering switching if she doesnt stop gaining. |
Don't know that brand. I know when I put Sabrina on Natural Balance - the first food she liked - she gained. She's pretty much leveled out, but i'm having to watch her because I just had her spayed. |
Anyone Anyone??????????????? |
How much does she weigh? I am switching Loki from Natural Balance to Canidae. All foods have different calories and recommended feeding amounts. Also, I've been told that the recommended about (on the bag) isn't necessarily accurate but there to sell food. Honestly, the only way to tell is to feel her ribs. You should be able to feel the bottom ribs. Also, dogs should have a "tuck up" If she is becoming overweight you can either reduce the amount of food or increase exercise. Loki is a VERY athletic (skinny!) 8 pounds. I feed him less than 1/2 cup a day. He eats about 1/4 of it in the morning and the rest at night. He rarely eats an entire 1/2 cup. Not sure what that tells you because all dogs are different! Also, he gets Charlee Bear treats (they are tiny) and that's it. No biscuits or anything like that. |
Wow I dont know . I leave my puppies food down all the time. But they are both picky eaters. |
Well I guess in the morning I'll just measure out like a 1/2c and spread that out over 3 feedings for the day and see how she does. I dont recall her weight before the switch but it is a noticeable difference from what she felt like before to now! Thanks ladies for the feedback. |
That's a myth, they do not gain weight. |
Nope! Harleys been on the exact same brand of food for months with no weight gain at all. But he does love it and since I switched him from Royal Canin puppy stage he has stopped itching too.(it had corn in it) He eats around 1 cup a day.. Sometimes more or less depending upon his mood and how many treats his grandmas gave him! (my mom and bf's mom!) lol |
My experience I prefer to mix foods. I always use Natural Balance and I was mixing with Chicken Soup for the puppy lover's soul. Well I heard and read about canidae, so I decided to switch from Chicken Soup to Canidae, still mixing with Natural Balance. I didn't notice weight gain but their poops were seedy..there was little yellow crumbs in their poop just like the food has. It was a softer too. So after months of using the Canidae, I switched back to mixing Chicken Soup with natural Balance and Vioala..the poops are back to normal. Again, I didn't notice weight gain, but the stool was different. Hugs, Irene |
Mine eat that and i don;t have a problem at all. If you feed 1/3c per meal it is way too much, if 1/3c per day sounds about right but keep in mind that it also depends on the normal weight and exercise level of the dog. If he is gaining weight it can only be because he is consuming too many calories (and this can happen with ANY food), you can feed a bit less food and exercise him more!! |
