Help required Hi I am new to this forum but need some advice, i have bought what i thought was a minature male yorkie puppy who weighed just 1lb at 8 weeks old, my problem is he is gaining weight at a rapid rate and now at 14 weeks weighs 3lbs and 10ozs. I am not aware that i am overfeeding although he has Royal canin mini dried food he only picks at it and i feed him 3 times a day with raw minced beef, chicken or tinned puppy food (he doesnt eat much tinned puppy food as doesnt seem to like it) i cannot believe he has gained at a rate of 7 - 8 ozs a week when he should be gaining 2 - 3. His tummy is not particularly fat and seems like a normal puppy any adivice would be appreciated Cheryle |
Your not overfeeding him so please dont give him less food. Little pups are growing and need good nutrition. Hes going to be 6 1/2 to 7 lbs as an adult. His weight gain is normal. I have a yorkie who was 1 lb at 7 weeks and he is 11 lbs. I dont think the breeder was honest about what size he would be. I hope you will still love him even though he will be bigger than expected |
Welcome to YT. :) A Yorkie is a Yorkie is a Yorkie. All Yorkies are a member of the toy group and they are all small dogs. Miniature is just a term some breeders choose to use to market their dogs (usually because it appeals to people). No breeder can accurately predict adult weight at such a young age. Your pup sounds happy and healthy. He just may be on the bigger side. :) |
What do you mean "miniature'???? if you mean "teacup" there is no such thing as a teacup Yorkie. As a pure guestimate I would say your Yorkie will grow to around 6lbs. Which is still breed standard. |
If he's not fat, then you have what will likely be a 7-8 pound boy. My only advice is to enjoy every ounce of him. Yorkies are notorious for making a lie of the growth charts and the younger they are, the less accurate the charts can be. Here in the U.S., the norm is to not place a pup before 12 weeks. At that point, you can be a 'little' more sure of the size, but it's still a guess. It depends on the dogs in your pups ancestry as to size, coat quality, etc.. The only way to be 'sure' of what you're getting is to get an older pup. I hope you're not disappointed in him and will love him for the dog that he is. He doesn't sound like he'll be over-size, just not small. I'm sorry if you were led to believe otherwise by the breeder. No reputable breeder will guanantee size on a pup.....especially at 8 weeks. |
that's normal; my dog was 3.5 lbs at 10 weeks; and now she's 10 lbs at almost 3 years. not all yorkies are tinny :) |
Mine grew at a very rapid rate, too. From week 9 to week 10, she gained 12 oz, going from 38 oz to 50 oz, or 30% growth in just one week! I talked to the vet about it, and he really did not seem concerned, he said it isn't a problem when a small breed dog grows so quickly (but it will pose a problem in a large breed dog). When I picked her out, according to the charts she should have ended up being around 6.5 lbs. At 12 weeks, she already weighed 4.5 lbs, and "they say" that a good estimate at final weight is double the 12 week weight so at that point it was predicted that she would end up at around 9 lbs. She's 11 months old and has been holding at 11 lbs 13 oz for a while, but I wouldn't put it past her to have another growth spurt. I've just stopped trying to guess what will happen in her case. She's very lean and very strong and sturdy, and still seems very small compared to the neighborhood dogs or the dogs at the dog park (even in the small dog side). She can really hold her own. |
I promise tiny is NOT better! I speak from personal experience. My boy was 1 pound at 11 weeks and I was up every two hours feeding him to make sure he didn't have hypoglycemia. I was a bit extreme but I was so worried! He is now 6 1/2 months and 3.5 pounds and we have worked for every ounce:D I love him like crazy and wouldn't change a thing but I wouldn't mind if he got bigger. |
I agree with what has been said. They are precious whatever they wind up to be. :) |
